Marie Jones Workman

1927 - 2016

Marie Workman Obituary

February 5, 1927 - October 15, 2016 Marie Savage Jones was born, raised, lived her entire life, and died at home in Santa Monica. She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Theresa Jones, and her brother John Paul "Jay" Jones. Marie attended St. Monica's and Roosevelt elementary schools, Lincoln Junior High, Santa Monica High School, Mount St. Mary's College and UCLA. At UCLA she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She taught at Will Rogers Elementary School in Santa Monica before dedicating herself to raising a family. After her children were grown, Marie was a substitute teacher for LAUSD, an experience she loved. For many years, Marie served in the Junior League of Los Angeles, the St. Ignatius Guild at Loyola High School, and the Social Service Auxiliary. Family and friends were everything to Marie. She married Henry K. Workman on October 4th, 1952, and through 64 years of marriage they were devoted partners until the end. Marie is survived by husband Henry; sons William (Kerin), Paul (Kelley), and Henry Jr. (Frances), and daughters Anne and Sarah; grandchildren Elizabeth, Christian, Caroline, Katherine, Henry III, Daniel, Andrew and Peter; and step-granddaughters Samantha and Jessica. In addition to her loving family, she will be missed by the many friends and relatives who became part of the larger family Marie built and nurtured through the years. Marie was beautiful, tough, affectionate, hard-working, always up for a party and quick to detect a phony. She was a gracious hostess, a loyal friend, a cherished wife and a beloved mother and grandmother. We will miss her every day and carry her memory always. A Rosary will be held at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Santa Monica at 7pm on Monday, October 24th. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Monica's at 10am on Tuesday, October 25th. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Marie's honor to a charity of your choosing.

Through Marie and Jack Thorpe, we came to know and admire Marie for her beauty of spirit and love of her family and friends. She made the world a better place. A light will be diminished on earth but a new star will shine down from heaven.

To all the Workman Family, especially Henry, Sally, Daniel Henry and Peter Thomas, we want to send all of our love and prayers for you upon the passing of Marie. She was such a wonderful example of love and family. She always welcomed us into her home with open arms. I truly believe that my Mother Patty welcomed Marie into Paradise with open arms, and probably a cocktail. Know that the Williams Family, as well as Dr Daniel Burschinger, are praying for all of you during this time of loss. Love, Megan, Hunt, Kate, and Hunt Jr Williams, and Roger Burschinger
