Marshall Bialosky Obituary

October 30, 1923 - February 26, 2016 Marshall Howard Bialosky passed away on February 26, 2016 after a long and productive life. Marshall was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 30, 1923. After serving in WW II, he earned a Bachelor of Music, cum laude, from Syracuse Univ. and a Masters of Music from Northwestern Univ. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study music composition in Italy. As the founding chairman of both the music and art departments at Cal State Dominguez Hills, he was defined by his passion for teaching, composing and performing contemporary music. During his career, Marshall garnered an impressive list of honors and awards and his musical compositions have been performed worldwide. As an enthusiastic and tireless advocate for the arts, he served on numerous boards and associations promoting fine arts and music in academia and the greater community. He was a loyal mentor to several young composers and performers. During his many travels to the Southwest, Marshall developed a deep appreciation for Native American culture, art and jewelry. Frequently seen sporting a Stetson and bolo tie, Marshall will be remembered as a snazzy dresser with a lively wit. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 35 years Sanjo Hanaoka Bialosky, his children Rebecca, Debbie, Adam and Shara Bialosky and his grandchildren Miles and Nina. Preceded in death by brother Herbert and his parents Lenore (Makoff) and Abraham Bialosky. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Gardena Valley Baptist Church 1630 W 158th St. Gardena. Guests are invited to dress colorfully and casually in tribute to Marshall's inimitable style. Donations may be sent to CSUDH, the Marshall Bialosky Music Scholarship.

Professor Bialosky,
I will never forget you. Sometimes you seemed severe, yet you and warmth and a little smile to your severity. Like a strict protective father you cared for our learning & education. I enjoyed the works you wrote--and especially enjoyed the repertoire you chose for our Choir.
You will be missed by many but you left behind gifts of perpetuity to your students!

Sorry to hear. In the end all we composers leave is the legacy of the art of music. I'm grateful that he took such tremendous care of all my musical materials against overwhelming opposition from so many quarters so many years ago. A lot of correspondence passed between us in the days when letter writing was still practiced. Rest eternal.

Sanjo, Shara, Rebecca, Debbie, & Adam--

My thoughts and prayers are with you. The Bialosky family has been very important in the life of the Cohen family. We first became acquainted with Marshall when my sister, Janelle, attended CSUDH when it opened in 1965, and she sang in Marshall's chorale.

I enrolled at Dominguez as a music major in 1975, and Sanjo and I became close friends through our music classes and our membership in Marshall's chorale.

In 1976, Marshall helped to establish the Gamma Sigma Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon at Dominguez. Sanjo and I became two of the 11 charter members. Because of Marshall's excellent guidance and hard work, after only one year, our collegiate chapter received two awards at the International Convention in Missouri in 1977!

My parents loved to attend every concert at Dominguez and, especially, enjoyed Marshall's clever and humorous introductions to the pieces that the chorale performed, which included some of his own compositions. Marshall appreciated my parents' support and referred to them as "honorary members of the Music Department!"

We were thrilled when Sanjo and Marshall married in 1980, and we felt extra-special joy when they were blessed with Shara!

Marshall was a very talented, intelligent man with a sharp wit. What I admired most, however, was the fact that he was a very humble, kind, and loyal person. Marshall was very lucky to have such a loving family to watch over him, especially during these last difficult years. Now you will continue his legacy of music and service to others.

I will always have many fond memories of the music and the fun times that Marshall brought into my life. His song will forever play in my heart.

In 1965 CSUDH opened its doors in Palos Verdes. I was lucky enough to be in Marshall Bialosky's first music class and also a member of his Women's Chorale. His knowledge of music and sense of humor enlivened college life. He made my family and future husband feel welcome to all performances. Our prayers are with Sanjo and her family.

As it happens I am one of those older members referred to by Marshall Bialosky's widow Sanjo in her message to SCI who belonged to the ASUC in its earliest days and who also, coincidentally, served terms as a regional chair soon thereafter. What I so keenly recall from those days was the genuine and selfless devotion Marshall always exhibited whenever he was present among us (then) younger composers. There was never a time when I was in his company at an SCI event or when my wife Genevieve and I were visiting our daughter in Marina del Re and Marshall drove up to join us for lunch one afternoon that I didn't enjoy and value his company. My only disappointment was that he didn't promote performances of his music more than he did, a disappointment that only grew greater when at last I heard it and wished that we could hear more.

When I was just getting started as a professional composer, Marshall gave me a great deal of upbeat encouragement and support, for which I'll always be grateful.

I am so sorry to hear about Marshall. As I began to make my transition to life as a composer he was very supportive, to the point of even chastising me (nicely) in 2005 when I organized an SCI regional at the University of New Mexico and didn't program a piece of mine in order to make more room for others. He had wanted to hear a piece of mine! I always enjoyed time spent with Marshall and I will miss him.

A tremendous loss!
Marshall was a great contributor to and supporter of the larger composition community.

One of my very favorite music school professors, Marshall was always a pleasure to talk to and work with. He was imbued with great grace, kindness, and intelligence. My condolences to Sanjo and the rest of his family. Godspeed, Marshall.

My husband, Salvatore Martirano and I both knew Marshall.
He was a very kind man and a gifted composer, and will be missed by many.

I will always remember seeing Marshall going for walks and carrying Shara with him. Maybe he was sharing some of his wisdom along the way.
I remember his admiration for Native Americans and Southwestern art.
