Martin Gelber Obituary

December 19, 1936 - December 2, 2019 Martin B. Gelber, an award-winning Architect, Professor, and life-long resident of Los Angeles, passed away December 2, 2019, two weeks shy of his 83rd birthday. Although he had endured a series of debilitating illnesses in his last years, ultimately the recent Getty Fire precipitated his death. He and his wife, Michela, evacuated their beloved home in the middle of the night-a residence he designed, built, and dwelled in for over 40 years. He never regained his equilibrium, succumbing to pneumonia at Cedars Sinai soon after. Martin dedicated much of his long career engaged in important educational and community endeavors, all in service to architecture. He was a much-loved and revered Professor at Los Angeles Pierce College for over 40 years. There, he was instrumental in developing one of the first accredited programs allowing community college architecture students to transfer to a 4-year university and obtain a Bachelor of Architecture degree. As affirmed by a former student, "I never thought I could have achieved such success - if it weren't for him... Mr. Gelber was the single most influential person in my academic life... (He will) remain in my heart for life." Martin also served as a Visiting Professor at his alma mater, the University of Southern California School of Architecture. In 2013, the school honored him as the Architectural Guild Distinguished Alum. Ultimately, Martin was a practitioner who designed many custom residential homes and commercial buildings throughout the Los Angeles area, including exceptional, award-winning works of modern architecture. He completed a variety of projects over a long career, from historic restorations to campus planning. In recognition of his achievements, in 1996, Martin was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. The late Ray Kappe FAIA stated, "He did really beautiful work... a person who DID things... not overtly ambitious but the person in the back who did A LOT OF the work." Martin was a persistently strong advocate for the historic preservation of various Los Angeles landmarks by highlighting their design significance. His major concern was the loss of institutional memory, and among many efforts, he helped establish Heritage Square. He was passionate about teaching people about the role of architecture, the environment, and preservation in their personal lives. Early on, decades before Leadership in Environmental Design (LEED), Martin curated the 1964 exhibition, Project Environment USA, to build awareness among interior designers, artists, landscape architects, and the public of the impact of architecture on our environment. In 1984, Martin was elected President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. As the city hosted the Olympic Games that year, he launched the design exhibition, 84 in '84, to recognize eighty-four esteemed Los Angeles architects. This represented the union of performance between athletics and design by celebrating excellence in two challenging human endeavors. Continuing his civic service, Martin worked with the late Bernard Zimmerman to help shape an architecture lecture series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) that became the AIA|LA Masters of Architecture lecture series (1999). By inviting established architects to speak about their work, they furthered knowledge about design and architecture with open events to the public. After retiring from his career as an educator, Martin continued to design and practice architecture. He and his wife enjoyed retreats to their Sea Ranch home, and travels to significant architectural sites across the globe. A social spirit with a passion for cooking and hosting dinner parties, Martin maintained connections to his many friends, former students and clients for life. Martin is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Michela Gunn, M.D., a practicing psychiatrist and former Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the USC Keck School of Medicine. A Celebration of Life for Martin is planned for later this year to pay tribute to this talented visionary, whose life touched many hearts, changed lives, and improved our built environment in countless ways.

I went to Pierce and had Martin as one of my instructors. I felt close to him for some reason. Our class enjoyed touring homes that he had designed. They always had that certain love of detail in the trim, cabinetry and thoughtful details that he carried out. I was able to locate him in 2017, I think, and it was so good to hear his voice. He told me about his parents and his father in particular. He let me know how hard that he had to work in order to put himself through USC and we reminisced about the Dome house up in the Hollywood Hills and other such fun structures around. One of the more important events that Martin arranged was for our class to receive a tour of Richard Neutra's Silverlake home. It was in the evening and I specifically recall his wife's sharing some of the details that went into the structure. Example; the masonite used under the built in seating in the corner of the main living area. It was pure magic to sit on the floor in front of
his wife while she relayed stories involving Richard and herself. I was absolutely in another world that evening and I can recall it so clearly - all with thanks to Martin. At the time, I didn't know that I would gain a year of study with Richard Neutra when I moved on to Cal Poly Pomona. What can I say.
Thanks to you Martin for giving a reality to my dreams. Ron Smith

Martin was my teacher in the early 90´s. He was quite simply the best ever in my experience. His knowledge was deep and wide but his human qualities were special. He had a wonderful and unique way with people. We became good friends. Martin was funny, fun to be around, ever engaged in the adventures of life, he found interest all around and was almost childlike in his expressions of wonder, amazement and appreciation. I am grateful to have known Martin for three decades. I will miss him.

I was just reading a book that Professor Gelber gave me years ago as a gift for helping him do some landscaping work for him when I was a student of his in 2003. I am very saddened to hear of his passing. Professor Gelber was very influential in my early days of studying architecture, although i decided to not peruse architecture as a degree the lessons he taught me have helped me tremendously. My condolences to his family

Martin was my professor and mentor in the early 1990's. Thanks to my time studying under Martin and working for him for several years I developed as an architecture and advocate for sustainable architecture. No one else cared as much as Martin did about his students and the profession. I will forever be grateful for his support, knowledge and passion. I treasure my time as a student and know that for those lucky enough to study under him they will forever be able to do creative innovative work. His wife Michela was an inspiration and support to him. I am also grateful to know them and admire their beautiful relationship. My wife and I always felt that they were a wonderful example to us personally and professionally.

I was a student of Martin Gelbers in 1975. Later became a draftsman in his office while attending Cal Poly Pomona. Mr Gelber was a fine mentor to me as I graduated and obtained my license. His early tutelage was significant in my career an Architect. He will be missed. He was a true educator, Architect and friend.

But for Martin I would not be who I am today. He open the door wide for my career as an architect and many others of us. He is life is marked by his buildings and those of his students. So many of us began at Pierce and over the years became dear friends of Martin and his lovely spouse Michele. His was a life of public service, his ear always there to listen and counsel us, to share in our successes. So many things about him were unknown to many of us until now.

Words cannot express our shared loss in his passing.

Love you always,

Martin was a great teacher of mine who taught me the critical basics of design back at Pierce. He was inspiring and I think of him often.
