He was united in holy matrimony to Kimberly Elise Trammel on October 20, 1989 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From this union, two children were born - Aja Arial and Jaelarose. Maurice began his spiritual journey as a youth member of Morning Star Church of God in Christ in Princeton. After settling in Los Angeles, he became a member of The Agape International Spiritual Center and enjoyed his involvement with his Circles of Light family. This enriched his life and provided inner strength, peace and support as he traveled his life's path.
He is predeceased by his father, Maurice Clifton Oldham, grandparents Merzie and Alice Odell Lee, Maurice Clifton Oldham, Sr., and Gladys Wood; uncles, Jack and Barry Oldham and William, Joseph and David Lee.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory, former wife, Kimberly Elise, their daughters Aja and Jaelarose (Butterf ly); his mother, Mamie Oldham, Princeton, NJ; his sister, Wendy Oldham and brother-in-law, Seymour Burke and nephew Camaran Ade of Fanwood, NJ; mother and father-in-law Erma and Marvin Trammel, Minneapolis, MN; one sister-in-law, Karla Trammel, Minneapolis, MN; two brothers-in-law, Mark and Vincent Trammel and sisters-in-law Susan and Sheila; aunts Lorraine Tucker, Queens, NY, Jeannie Saunders (John E.), Baltimore, MD, Dorothy Oldham, Baltimore, MD; Virginia Moore, Trenton, NJ, Stella Brown, Peekskill, NY, Minnie Craig (Eric), Princeton, NJ, Virginia Lee, Bensalem, PA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Here is the second poem that I wrote about Junior; again, I share it especially for the family. Truly, he left us all too soon, and for that I am so sad, realizing what I missed over the years. But we are all blessed with our memories of him.

Love,

Maurice--
Junior--

You wanted us to call you
Maurice,
But in our hearts
Your name will be
forever,
Junior.

Word of your passing
started as a trickle.
Now it is a flood
of messages
of love worldwide
pouring out
over the Internet.

I stumbled on the site
with your obituary posted
from Minneapolis.
I posted my tribute
on Friday,
filling up page 3
alongside
friends and classmates
from New Jersey.

By Saturday,
four pages
with messages from
Atlanta,
Seattle,
Tel-Aviv,
Tokyo.

Lee and Leatha added
to the Baltimore contingent.
Today,
your cousin from New York
and friends from California
and more of the Jersey Boys--
and Girls--
swelled the chorus
of love and loss,
the greater portion
being love.

All so consistent:
gentle (giant),
thoughtful,
inspiring,
intelligent,
joyous.

What a remarkable
achievement.
To live a life
so straight
and true.
To give
with no thought
of return,
and to have
all you have given
returned to you
tenfold.

You’ve earned your wings,
for the lives you touched,
for the life you made.
For your daughters,
for your art,
for your vision,
for your heart.

You’ve done
what you were meant
to do.

And for your reward,
eternal peace.

And our reward?
Somehow,
to pay it forward.

I want to share two poems that I have written about Junior since he passed.

The first is very long, so I hope there will be room for it here.

I will post the second one separately.

To Aunt Mamie, Wendy, and the Oldham and Saunders Families, these are especially for you.

Love,

Jackie

Maurice (Junior)
(December 30, 1958-May 17, 2007)

April 18-28, 2008

Junior

Junior came into our lives
when he was 12 years old,
visiting Baltimore for the
Oliver-Fitzhugh Family Reunion.

Maurice Clifton Oldham, Jr.,
son of my Uncle Maurice (nee Jr.),
was, according to our Aunt Jeanne,
really Maurice III because
his Dad was really the Junior
to our Grandfather
Maurice Clifton Oldham, Senior.

But who would ever
go through life
with the name “Third”?

So my cousin Maurice was
Junior.

Junior was the oldest--and tallest--
of the Stair-Step Cousins.
My brother David was 11.
Aunt Jeanne’s son Tony was 10.

Junior, from Princeton, NJ,
looked like a 1971 preppie--
dressed in a tailored shirt,
pressed slacks,
shoes,
neatly trimmed Afro.

David and Tony,
Baltimore boppers,
sported wild-colored,
patterned shorts,
tee shirts,
white tube socks
with orange and black
bands at the top,
and the coolest sneakers
of 1971.

David also wore an Afro,
longer and wilder than Junior’s.
Tony’s hair,
too fine for an Afro,
lay in curls.

While David and Tony
clowned around,
racing and running
in the front yard--
David in stocking feet,
having abandoned
the cool sneakers,

Junior stood
apart,
aloof.
Serious.

But that summer,
the Stair-Step Cousins
became friends.

For several summers after,
Junior came to Baltimore
to visit his Dad
(who--in his 40s,--suffered
early-onset Alzheimer’s)
and the Cousins.
He liked staying
with David
at his Uncle Jack’s house.

Then, Life called.

Junior went to college,
then left Princeton, NJ
for grad school
in Atlanta.
David attended Morgan
in Baltimore.
Tony joined the Air Force.

Aunt Jeanne was the conduit
for news on Junior:
his graduate degree in finance,
his marriage to Kimberly,
their life
in Minnesota,
their move to California,
the births of their daughters.

Kimberly rose
in acting.
Aunt Jeanne’s wall
was adorned with the poster for
“Set It Off,”
Kimberly’s breakthrough film.

Junior would call
or fly home to Baltimore
when he could.

Then, 2004.
The first Oldham Family Reunion,
organized by Aunt Jeanne,
brought Junior
and his girls,
home.

He wanted to be called
Maurice
but answered to
Junior,
anyway.

His older daughter,
15 years old,
looking, eerily,
like her father
on that long-ago day
when Junior
first came
to us.
She was
tall and slender,
serious, and
aloof.
And looked
just like the lost twin
of David’s 21-year-old daughter.

The daughters of two
Stair-Step Cousins
were born on the same day,
6 years apart.

Junior’s younger daughter
and David’s grand-daughter
were nearly the same age
and played together happily.

Junior was a Changed person,
his Afro full and wild,
his clothes California Chic Casual.
Still serious,
but with a fire
and a passion
we had not seen before,
regaling us with his memories
of those Baltimore summers
and his delight
in being with the
Old’-hams (pronounced “ancient pork”).
(Aunt Jeanne and the Ohio clan
were the only Old’-ums
in the crowd.)

We promised to continue
The Oldham Reunions,
setting the next one
in Ohio,
in 2006.

And that one was
a grand affair,
except that
Uncle Jack wasn’t there;
stuck in a rest home
in Baltimore.

But all the now-adult cousins,
from Baltimore, Ohio,
and California-by-way-of-Princeton,
became friends
over drinks
and pledged
undying connections.

And Maurice/Junior promised
to host the Third Oldham Reunion
in Atlanta,
where he was moving.
Having been divorced,
he wanted to move on.

Then, my Dad (Uncle Jack) died
on the first day of January, 2007.
Junior flew home to Baltimore
for the funeral,
taking photographs
of everyone at the repast.

Four months later,
Junior was gone.

Massive heart attack
at age 47.

My condolences to the Oldham Family.
I grew up with Maurice (junior) in Princeton, NJ. I remember the Youth Center, Blairstown, the pool, etc. Our high schools were rivals in the sports arena. EHS vs. PHS!
May God bless you and keep you!

We're deeply saddened by the loss of Junior. I remember his freshman year at Princeton High. He was so talented at basketball they started him on the Varsity team. I can still picture Junior's beauftifull smile and his big afro with his Princeton High sweatband around his head. He was genuinely a beautiful person, always pleasant and forever showing his lovely smile. That is the way we will remember Maurice Oldham forever. So true is the saying, "God takes the good people young." We can all find comfort in knowing that Junior is in a better place than all of us now.

Sorrowfully Submitted,

I was so sadden when I heard the news of my cousin Junior's passing. We share many memories growing up in Princeton. Most of all the days you would come to our home for fun and games. I loved you then and will always love you. You will be terribly missed. RIP.

Unfortunately the last time I saw Junior was at my wedding in 1972 (I think). I have a picture of the quiet brother (Junior) and cousin (Leon) of my friend Wendy as they sat in the back of the church looking as though they're ready to burst as the frightened ring bearer had to be coaxed up the aisle. Memories of Morning Star and walking around Princeton town between services and growing up and away from people places and things leave a huge lump in my throat.

I can't express the pain I feel in the face of reality - that I won't get a chance to experience the grown-up Maurice. I stare at his pictures and imagine the quiet and serene little boy I once ignored because he was my friend's baby brother we referred to as "Junior". I recently asked if people still call him that . . .

I love hearing from people that he remained the Junior I remember and, though it hurts, I will take comfort in knowing that he lived a full, spiritual life.

June 23, 2007

Kellye and I are shocked and saddened beyond words. You were taken far, far too soon, Maurice. Rest in peace. Look up Michael and David. Love and condolences to the family. Remember how Maurice loved and found strength and comfort in us all. Keith

To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD. That is the assurance God leaves for His people to know. Junior will always be with us, because memories never fade. Let us pray for peace to come quickly to his family. When I think of Junior I remember how kind and respectful of others he always was. To all be blessed.

Junior will be greatly missed! He was definetly always a guy to look up to, not just because of his height when we were growing up, but because of the paths in life he chose.

Remembering Junior on Father's Day.

This photo is of the 3 Mo Oldhams (that's the 3 Maurice Oldhams) at our Oldham Reunion last summer: Maurice L. Oldham Jr (my nephew), Maurice L. Oldham Sr (my brother), and of course, Junior, our cousin. I wish the picture had turned out a little bit better.

Junior, you have joined your Uncle Jack (my dear Father) and your own Dad (my Uncle Maurice) in Heaven. I thank God that we are family, and I'm so grateful for the love we shared. Oldhams (Remember, it's pronounced like "ancient pork") Forever!

Hello,

I...how...when? I did not know. No one told me. I just found out today! I was at a funeral in Princeton. I was looking around to see Junior's mother among the people. A gentleman at our table mentioned her son passing. I insisted he was wrong. There were so many PHS classmates of ours attending the service. So, I asked around. Once it was confirmed by someone, I had to excuse myself and leave.

Junior was doing so well in March! We'd been in touch over the last couple of years. He was so encouraging to me, regardless of what he was going through. He was a deep and spiritual man with a very charitable spirit. He loved his girls so much. He loved life in general. I cannot believe this. I am so choked up. I cannot write anymore at this moment.

to be continued...Justina

From Allah we come and to him is our eventual return. I have always been thinking of 'Junior'over the years and now I won't be able to call him since he recently returned to the creator. He was so sweet and our family loved him....remembering his trip out to the Bay Area California with his Mom when he was a little boy....and how our dog ate his 'clothes' (underwear) and how my mother had to go and buy him all new ones...(sigh) Junior I will miss you. In the last few years we had the opportunity to grow closer to you. We saw you in happy times, like the Family Reunion, and in sadder times, like our recent family funerals. We talked about good things, like planning for Aunt Lorraine's 100th, and sadder things, like your own change of family circumstance. We still can't believe you are gone; but we will remember you for the time we were able to share with you. Rest in Peace, Cuz.

I'm back at my desk at work. I had to take yesterday off to deal with the absolute shock hearing about my dear friend Maurice. I'm not signing this guest book to say anything prolific. I just want to pay homage to someone I considered a true friend.

While many of you knew Maurice from childhood, I met him at B-school (Atlanta University). He was not only just a classmate but a member of our small study group (Maurice, me and Traci Woods).

We "clicked" as a group because we shared similar qualities. Maurice had a keen intellect and would often question the conventional approach finance studies required. We shared that same qualities with a strong dose of brutal honesty with each other as well.

We held on to our friendship after graduation. Not necessarily through frequent contact; but, we could always pick up where we left off.

As I see his photos on his website I realize that Maurice was living out some of his desires and had experienced places many people don't get a chance see. He witnessed and accomplished much while he was here.

I thank God for letting me befriend this one of kind brotha. I'll miss him on this side of life's journey.

Condolences to his family from me and my family.

God's peace be unto you.

Maurice, old friend, may you rest in peace knowing that you made a positive difference in many lives both seen and unseen.

I was terribly shocked and saddened to learn last night of Maurice Oldham's passing.
Now I speak about Junior to his friends and family, who may not have known him as or when I did, with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes.

Junior was considered special, beyond his years back in middle school, when I knew him best.
Junior stood out as a big personality, someone who was good natured, particularly bright, humorous, very articulate, always respectful, and very, very nice.
To this day I remember comments he made in class often said with a sly smile, forever challenging the teachers with contrary, intelligent thoughts and opinions and educating while entertaining his fellow students. I remember, for one, learning "It's my prerogative!" – a phrase he taught us all in class in 6th grade, having repeated it numerous times!

As I can see from his website, Junior clearly lived up to his promise, but his was a life cut short. A tragedy for all who knew and loved him.

My sincerest condolences to his family on their terrible loss.

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of Maurice "Junior" Oldham, and my prayers go out to his family and loved ones, especially his two daughters who have lost their father so young in life. Junior, I remember you in middle and high school -- you were always quick to smile, had a sparkle in your eyes and could always make a witty comment. You will be missed!!!

Junior,

Your leaving took us all by surprise. I am so grateful for the times we spent together as a family, over our lifetimes, and especially at the Oldham Family Reunion in Ohio last year.

You leave such a wonderful legacy for us, in your beautiful daughters, in your striking photographs, in your piercing eyes, in your thoughtful manner.

I will miss you, my cousin. But I know you are reuniting with our loved ones on the Farther Shore.

Be at peace.

Love,

Your Cousin,

Jackie Oldham

Junior was a brother that I always looked up to. Our backyards were adjacent to each other so I many opportunities to gain knowledge about life and basketball. I even served as ballboy his senior year. He will be missed by many.

Jumior, classmate and friend, may your soul rest in peace. You were a true gentlemen and I will always remember you 'hitting the boards' on the court at the PHS gym, back in the day and our conversation "walkin the halls of PHS" at our 25th reunion.

Junior, you were such a presence -- in high school, and ever since....

You brought people together. Even recently, you were preparing for our 30th reunion this coming October, working on your list and helping to make sure that all of us who grew up together had the chance to reconnect.

We will miss you so much.

May your family and friends feel the love you inspired, now and always....

My deepest sympathy.

To the Family of Junior Oldham:

His tall statue and quite demeanor is a memory that I will always have when reflecting on my childhood. He will always be remembered as one of the guys from around the way that had an extreme passion for basketball!

Clay Street, the Black Top, the Youth Center, the Community House, Blairstown, the Pool...when I think of all the good times in the neighborhood, I remember Junior.

Growing up on Clay Street was the best life any kid could have been afforded!!!! We were raised in the most affluent ghetto anyone could have ever known, bka "the Golden Ghetto!!!" :)

God Bless the Oldham Family. Junior will truly be missed!!!
