Michael Glueck Obituary

Physician, writer, husband, father. Mike Glueck was a longtime resident of Newport Beach, former Chief of Staff of Costa Mesa Memorial Hospital, and former Poet Laureate of Newport Beach. He also wrote a longtime column "Deep Thoughts from Dr. Mike" for various local newspapers, the Newport Beach Independent, OC Business Journal, and online for Newsmax. He was a graduate of the Cleveland Heights High class of 1956, and later inducted into the Heights High Hall of Fame. After graduating from Cornell in 1960, he attended Case Western Reserve Medical School, finishing in 1964. Served as a Lt. Commander in the US Public Health Service to 1968. Finished his residency at Harvard / Mass General Hospital in 1973. Moved to Newport Beach, where he became Head of Radiology at Costa Mesa Memorial Hospital. After retiring from medicine, he became a writer on medical-legal issues and also did humorous reflections on life; he wrote over 1,000 articles for various publications, including many about mental health parity, concussions in sports, the Angels baseball team and stories about his grandkids. He also authored the book Super Soccer Saturdays about his son's championship youth season for a Newport team, the Sharks. After 2000, he wrote poems to read at the NB Library annual children's event, where he was named Poet Laureate. In his last 15 months, he and his wife Miriam Glueck of 52 years moved to New York to be closer to their children Jeffrey and Jennifer, and 5 grandkids (Brooke, Eli, Alexandra, Annika, Zach). He was a devoted husband, father, friend, and advocate to make the world a better place. "Plant shade trees under which you know you will never sit," was a favorite adage for Mike. He will be greatly missed. He was buried with his parents Laurence and Eleanor, and brother George on December 10th at Mayfield Cemetery, Cleveland. In lieu of flowers, please donate to his favorite cause, California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, where he was a longtime Board member.

Have comfort in knowing that God is close to those who are brokenhearted. Because of God's love expressed through the ransom sacrifice of his Son, Jesus Christ, we can look forward to seeing our loved ones again. He keeps them all in his memory. May you find comfort, strength and hope in the Father of comfort and tender mercies.
