To The Gold Sheet Family:
There is not much I can add to all the wonderful things that have been said about Mr. Olshan. I have subscribed for only 8 years but was always impressed with the articles written by Mr. Olshan. He definitely had more to talk about than just sports and wrote with the eye of a keen observer of life. I will forever remember the quip you wrote 2 issues ago quoting him as saying "it's good to be alive & ahead by seven" Great one.

Mort wrote about not just sports. Sure, he loved sports and was good enough to make a great living writing about it and forecasting how it was unfolding. But he made it exciting to think about. Made it come to life on a piece of paper. And made one ponder not just what would likely occur but how and why.
He was one of the rare kind that made you curious to hear what he said and anxious to find out when he'd say it. I confess to setting all else aside so I could digest his ramblings in total isolation.
I, for one, have enjoyed life a bit more due to Mort.

To the Olshans and the Gold Sheet family,
I always looked forward to reading Mr. Olshan's columns. They combined insight, perspective, humor, and experience and were well written and entertaining. Mr. Olshan obviously loved to share his talents with others, and through 40+ years of the Gold Sheet, he did that. It is an awesome legacy! I thank TGS and Mr. Olshan for everything. I know Mort Olshan only through his Gold Sheet publications and his distinguished reputation. Before the internet transformed sports handicapping, the Gold Sheet was the first and only way for me to start plotting my weekly football wagers.
As a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers, my favorite Gold Sheet remembrance (which I have often shared) will always involve Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren being hired before the 1992 season to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Titletown. Both Wolf and Holmgren sang the praises of QB Brett Favre and made the move to acquire him, and I was stoked over the prospects, given the nice chunk of change I had made on Southern Miss as a live dog when the Gold Sheet had touted that special "fahv'-ray" kid (that's how I had thought it was pronounced!) on a weekly basis. How right the Gold Sheet crew was on that one!
Best wishes as you continue a tradition of excellence.

One of my main reasons for subscribing to the Gold Sheet for the past 10 years was reading Mort Olshan's commentary on life and society. Mort Olshan exemplified the class and honesty all good people strive to achieve. He was a best friend to the sports bettor and the underdog in general. I met Mort about a dozen years ago and he enriched my life with his wit and charm and personal philosophy. In a world of self-serving people Mort was a true breath of fresh air. He was a giver
both to charities and of himself.
He left The Gold Sheet in solid hands. Mort knew what he was doing in life and now he has shown all of us how to leave this life...
With dignity, and with a look forward. Mort was truly a one of a kind guy. Rest in Peace my friend.

Billy Joel once popularized in song the cultural phrase "Only the good die young." Well, leave it to Mort to embody the contrarian case to even that argument!
I remember first meeting Mort when I was a rising sportscaster and he, an established, successful sports businessman. He treated me with respect, acted as if I were his equal, and queried me about my pursuits with genuine interest. Over the years, that treatment of me never wavered.
I feel privileged to have known Mort and to have come to work for the Gold Sheet some 20 years after our initial meeting.

I hope and trust that someday sooner rather than later, Mort's comprehensive history and legacy will be writ and writ large. It is a helluva story. Dear Gary,
In only a very few times in my life have I ever felt true emptiness in my body. Those times were, of course, when a very close family member passed away. I had that empty feeling once again when I learned of your dad's death. Now the emptiness is combined with a feeling of deep sadness.
Your father was a wonderful man. I'm so glad, and feel very fortunate, that I got to know him. I'll always have the fondest memories of the times I spent with him and the many phone conversations I had with him over the last 27 years. They are all very memorable. He was truly a unique and caring man. I, and countless others, will miss him so very much. And I will never, ever, forget him.
My sorrow can't begin to approach what yours and your family's must be. But my sorrow is still very great. It's rare that I have cried when a non-family member passed away. But it took a while for my tears to stop because of this very sad reality.
Sports bettors the world over are fortunate that you and the Gold Sheet family are there to carry on the great tradition that your father started. They know you'll continue to adhere to the high standards that he set. He was the class of the sports handicapping business and truly a class of one.
I only wish I could express it more eloquently, but I'll just say that you and your family have my deepest, heartfelt sympathy.

To the Olshan & Gold Sheet Family, Pioneer, Legend, Icon, all of which can be used to accurately describe Mort professionaly, as by definition they mean quite simply the original and to which all others are to be measured! I never met Mort, but Ive known about the Goldsheet, just wasn't a serious better at the time.
When one day during one of my delivery stops, I just happen to be delivering a package to the offices of the famed Goldsheet.
I was flabbergased! (sorry for my spelling)
I began talking about how I had heard and seen the Goldsheet before at the newstands, knew what it was for but never bothered to pick it up. I had always stuggled with picking games myself. They offered me a FREE sheet, which I took home that night and read cover to cover.
I opened an online account, and made my first online bets based on the information. I played parlays to get the most for my dollar. Not a wise move overall, but I figured I tried before and have gotten close but never won.
Well I didn't win all the bets, but I won a small parlay and a couple of single games, including overs and unders which I never used before.
I've been a Goldsheet user ever since that day two years ago. I would like to thank Mort for all his insite on Football, especially College and I also my most heartfelt wishes go out to his family. He will be missed...
