Myrtis Butler Obituary

Myrtis Mayfield Martin Butler died November 15 at her home in Beverly Hills. She was 101 years old. Myrtis was born January 31, 1917 in Stanly County, North Carolina, to Mary Harriss Martin and Ernest Moore Martin. The eldest of 5 children, Myrtis was the last surviving Martin sibling, preceded in death by sisters Dora Eugenia (Dora Gene) Lewis, Mary Pauline (Polly) Coffman, Eloise (Hooty) Trent, and brother Ernest Moore Martin, Jr. Myrtis was married to Charles Dawson (Daws) Butler, famed voice of many beloved cartoon characters, for 45 years until his death in 1988. Myrtis and Daws met during World War II in Washington DC, where Daws was serving in the Navy and Myrtis was working at the Pentagon. They moved to Los Angeles in 1945 and to their home in Beverly Hills in 1950. Myrtis and Daws had four sons: David T. (Margie), Donald M., Paul D. (Celeste), and Charles A., all of whom survive their mother. She is survived also by three granddaughters: Annie (Robert) Shirreffs, Molly Butler, and Bernadette Butler, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Myrtis was a super supporter and volunteer for numerous local organizations for decades, including St. Anne's, Good Shepherd Shelter for Homeless Women and Children, and Nazareth House. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor and remember her life may donate to one of these three organizations. Services will be Saturday, November 24, 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Mortuary Chapel, Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

When I was three years old, Myrtis made as a Christmas gift for me a Cecil the Sea Serpent hand puppet. At the time, her husband, Daws, did the live, daily Beany and Cecil television show (and he was Beany). She always fostered an environment that welcomed neighborhood kids to play, and I feel honored that we have been family friends ever since, for the past 65 years.
