Nathaniel Baker Obituary

August 1, 1950 - February 28, 2019 Nathaniel Ray Baker (Ned) of Hampton, VA, son of the late Jack & Lily Baker and brother of the late Myron Baker, died suddenly on February 28. Ned was an employee at the NASA Langley Research Center where he worked on several projects including experiments on the Space Shuttle. Prior to living in VA, Ned also worked in Denver, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Ned held a Master of Science degree in engineering from UCLA. At school, Ned was involved in the application of hydrogen gas engines. Ned was an ardent downhill skiing enthusiast who attended many trips with "ski-buddies" from VA. Ned also embellished care on others; late in life, he took care of both his parents, who were hampered by illness, until their demise. Ned left us too soon. He was interred in a private ceremony in Los Angeles, CA.

Paid a visit to Mt Sinai / Hollywood Hills on what would have been Ned's 74th birthday. Shared a beer and a few fond memories. RIP good friend.

Having visited the grave of Oscar Schindler I was familiar with the custom of leaving a stone as a token of my visit. The folks at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills were kind enough to give me a small packet of soft pebbles [I guess we do not want to mess too much with the lawn mower blades] to leave as a token of my visit this Passover 2022. Rest easy good buddy.

It is so very hard to believe Ned left us three years ago today 19 February 2019. Your wicked sense of humor, your laugh, your love of skiing and the outdoors...they linger still. RIP buddy.

Ned was a classmate when we were both undergraduates at UCLA and we both lived on the Fifth Floor, Bacchus House, in the Sproul Hall dormitory. Ned was an engineering major and we both shared a love of things automotive. He helped me to remove the stock exhaust manifold on my 1969 Boss 302 Mustang and replace them with Hedman after market headers. He helped me to re-jet my Holley 4 barrel carburetor. One of the projects he worked on at UCLA was the Hydrogen Car Project where they modified a donated Ford 351 Windsor [or was it a Cleveland] to run on compressed hydrogen and put it in an AMC Pacer, with stunning clean air results. Our birthdays were close, his August 1 and mine August 2. When we both turned 21 Ned waited a day for our big celebration at the Oar House in Santa Monica, a legendary watering hole on Main Street. We would empty many a pitcher as the years progressed. Ned went on to work with NASA on a number of space projects. On a trip to Washington DC a decade ago Ned came up from his home in Hampton VA and met us for lunch at the Air & Space Museum. He spent the afternoon explaining his role in several of the NASA projects featured there. My late wife, my dear darling Peggy, is buried at the adjacent Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, so I occasionally pass by to pay my respects to Ned at Mt Sinai Hollywood Hills. Rest in peace loyal friend.
