Nicholas Saakvitne Obituary

June 25, 1952 - October 2, 2018 Nicholas Larsen Saakvitne, 66, of Pacific Palisades, died on October 2, 2018 after suffering a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. Nick was a pension attorney and professional ERISA fiduciary and trustee in Santa Monica, California. He was beloved as a father, husband, brother, and friend. Nick graduated in 1977 from New York University School of Law with a J.D. and an LLM in Taxation. He was born in Boston to Cynthia Logan and Harald Saakvitne. He grew up in Lexington, MA, and graduated from University of Massachusetts Honors College. He married Sharon Lee Heritage in 1979 and they settled in Los Angeles where they raised Jody and Andersan, their cherished children. In 1989 with his business partner, Steven E. Rosebaugh, Nick founded his own law firm specializing in pension law and providing ERISA and ESOP fiduciary services. He was a skilled carpenter and boat captain, and voracious reader. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon Heritage, his daughter Jody and her partner Chris Andersen, his son Andersan and his wife Nicci, and his grandson Greysan Lee Saakvitne. He is also survived by his four siblings: Elizabeth Bennett, Jens, Karen, and James Saakvitne, and their spouses and partners. He was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews and will be sorely missed. A memorial service is planned for November.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Nick's passing. He was a wonderful colleague, attorney, and friend. I worked with Nick when I was at the DOL and later as a private investigator. Nick was ethical, caring, and always concerned about the wellbeing of his clients, and his benchmark was heads and shoulders above the crowd in every capacity in which I knew him. I always regretted missing the opportunity to be on his boat during the holiday boat parade in Marina del Rey. He loved that parade and told me how he loved to shoot off his cannon at the end of the parade! He had such a joie de vivre for life, his family, and his friends. Nick was truly one of the very best "good guys" who will be sorely missed.

We are very sorry to hear about Nick and send our sympathies to his family. He was a great optimist who saw good in everything. I knew him for the last 5 years through our business relationship. Business aside, we enjoyed hearing about his wonderful wife and family and how excited he was over his grandchild. He is dearly missed.

I am so sad to hear about Nick's passing, and send my condolences to his family. I have known Nick for decades, and he was truly one of this earth's good guys. If there is a heaven, he is there now.

So sorry to hear of Nick's passing. I got to know him when I was an ERISA attorney in the LA area and found him to be always gentle and kind and willing to share his knowledge. My best wishes and heartfelt sympathies go to his family.

I just heard the news, prayers and condolences to the family. I've worked with Nick for the past 6 years. He was always knowledgeable and helpful. I loved his calm demeanor as we navigated tough situations. He was one of a kind and a loss to the industry.
