I don´t know why Mr. Howard came to mind just now, but thanks to the internet I found this small memorial. He was my piano teacher from the time I was 7 until 16, 1954 to 1963. I definitely wasn´t the greatest pupil, after awhile begging off student recitals - going blank was a problem - and often skimping on practice to shoot baskets in the driveway or kick field goals in the street over the electrical wires. Through it all, he was very patient, and was even willing to bend from classical composers to try to salvage me with an introduction to jazz, which was definitely not his musical language. In the end, the choice in high school came down to playing on the high school basketball team or practicing piano, and the former won out. Mr. Howard was disappointed, but realistically my rhythmic aptitudes lent more to sports than playing a musical instrument. That said, I owe him a lot him my life-long musical affinities and activities. There´s also one other thing I din´t forget: tha the antisemitism of the time in L.A. led him to feel the need to change his name in order to make a living as a piano teacher. I´m glad he was able to make a career and name for himself in other ways musical as well.

So sorry to hear last night of Orrin's passing. David, Myra, Benj and all who loved this ever-dapper and erudite man, my thoughts are with you. I was lucky to have known him, and I know how terrifically proud he and Shirley were of all of you.

So sorry to hear of Orrin's passing. I worked with him as a volunteer in the Archives some years ago and appreciated his warmth and wit.
