Paul M. Weil

June 14, 1927 - September 14, 2016 Paul M. Weil was born June 14, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died on September 14, 2016 at age 89 in Anahola, Hawaii. He is survived by his loving wife and life partner of over 57 years, Roberta L. Weil, of Anahola, HI; daughter Martha (Glenn) Decherd, Portland, OR; sons Michael (Janice Baker) Weil, Berkeley, CA; and Raymond (Carmela) Lanza-Weil, Shelburne Falls, MA; grandchildren Aaron (Larra) Decherd, New York, NY; Sara (Solomon) Rutzky, Raleigh, NC, Caliandra (Dan) Burstein, Alexandria, VA; Sophia Lanza-Weil, Oakland, CA; and Zachary Weil, Novato, CA; and great-grandchildren Naphtali, Raphael, and Moira Rutzky, and Isaac Burstein. He was predeceased by his first wife, Maurine Weil; mother, Sylvia Becker; step-father Abraham Becker; and infant daughter, Beth Rachel Weil. Paul was a World War II Navy Veteran. He attended Stanford University and UCLA and received his Juris Doctor Degree from Southwestern University Law School. Paul was an attorney for over fifty years, practicing in Whittier, CA and San Diego County, CA.; with an emphasis on business, real estate, and banking, and he was instrumental in founding three independent banks in Southern California. Paul provided pro bono services to a number of community service organizations. He was a long-time member of the National Commission of the Anti-Defamation League ("ADL") and of its National Executive Committee and was the recipient of ADL's prestigious Civil Rights Achievement Award. Paul was awarded Honorary Life status on the ADL National Commission and Executive Committee and served on the Los Angeles and San Diego ADL Regional Boards and Executive Committees. In Whittier, CA he served as founding Chair of the Whittier Fair Housing Committee and was twice elected to the Board of Trustees of the East Whittier City School District, including three terms as President. He was a charter member and board member of Temple Beth Shalom, Whittier B'nai B'rith, and the North Friendly Hills Home Owners' Association, serving as President of the last two. He moved to Anahola, Kauai, Hawaii in 2005 and continued to be active in community service. He was a counselor for SCORE, a member and Chair of the Kauai County Board of Building Appeals, and a member of the County Board of Ethics. He truly enjoyed the beauty of Kauai and their home, orchard, and dogs in Anahola. He was happiest when children and grandchildren visited in Hawaii and on trips to visit family and for special occasions, including graduations and weddings. He and Roberta greatly enjoyed world travels together along with his cameras, plus trips taking grandchildren to Israel and other lands. In his final months he received loving care from Lose "Rose" Tauhelangi and Naitingikei "Gale" Mafileo, and from Kauai Hospice nurses and doctors. Paul lived a very full 89 years and will be sorely missed. Services will be conducted at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Dr., Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, September 25, at 2:00pm. At Paul's request, the dress code is Aloha casual. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Kauai Hospice, Weil 'Ohana Continuing Education Fund (4457 Pahe'e St., Lihue, HI 96766); the Anti-Defamation League; or the charity of your choice.
