Peter Cohen Obituary

COHEN, Peter J. Age 67. Originally of Winthrop, MA and a longtime resident of Venice, Peter died on March 25, 2009 after a battle with brain cancer. Peter was the adoring son of the late Selwyn and Rose Cohen, and loving big brother of Mady Brown of New York City. Still doting husband (after 32 years) of Ellen and father of Matthew (Nancy) Cohen and Jessica (Michael) Berry, "Pa" heartily welcomed the next generation of his family, his three beloved grandchildren, Jackie Rose, Mason and Adria. He was a loving and loyal friend to many. Peter was a man of great passions. He loved movies, reading, music, food (particularly ice cream and sushi), and traveling. He was a devoted fanatic of the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots. He loved mediocre 70's music, as well as Mel Torme and Neil Sedaka. Thankfully, he also appreciated Neil Diamond. Though work was never his priority, Peter earned a good living as a career salesman where he applied his legendary structure and focus. A founder of the well known Mar Vista commune, Mayday, Peter was a lifelong liberal political advocate for all the world's people. He enjoyed nothing more than tearing into Republicans for being ... Republican! As a lay officiant, Peter proudly married over 50 couples, offering up assurances and hopes that humor, love and faith in each other would see them through anything, as it did for him. Peter will be missed by more people than you can shake a stick at. A celebration of Peter's life will be held on Sunday, March 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Malinow & Silverman, 7366 S. Osage Avenue, Los Angeles 90045. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory may be made to the Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA, P.O. Box 957357, 10833 Le Conte Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90095-7357.

Sincere condolences to Ellen, Matthew, Jessica, their immediate families and friends. Peter always honored the significance of extended family. I will miss his emails, letters and photos. We are the poorer without him, but the richer for having known him.

I worked with Pete for years at AHP. He was the light of the office hands down. Pete always put a smile on my face with his stories, anecdotes and analogies! In 2006 I was blessed to have Pete wed myself and husband, Ryan. Sushi at Midori's will never be the same. Pete, thanks for everything, you will be truly missed.

I shall always think of Peter as the angel who opened the family door to me when I enjoyed and shared years of affection with his father in our "twilight" years. Peter will be missed by many, especially his family, and I send my condolences to each one of you dear people.
