Philip Cifarelli Obituary

CIFARELLI, Dr. Philip S. One of the first practicing physician-attorneys in Orange County, a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army and a beloved father and grandfather, died on April 2, 2008, from complications of advanced lung cancer at his home in Orange, California. He was 72 years old. Dr. Cifarelli was born in his parent's New York City home on July 18, 1935. The son of an Italian immigrant father, Dr. Cifarelli spent his youth in Jackson Heights, New York. As a teenager he entered the men's Golden Gloves Boxing league where he earned a strong winning record over a short boxing career in which he was never knocked down and lost only one bout. Dr. Cifarelli's true calling and passion was education. He studied Biology at Long Island University while working nights as an attendant at the famed Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, where he developed a life-long love of opera. He excelled in school and earned honors for academic achievement including a Departmental Medal in Biology. He went on to attend medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. On a visit home during medical school he met Jean Abitabile, a New York native, whom he later married. After graduating from Georgetown, Dr. Cifarelli returned to New York City where he practiced medicine for several years, working with well-known New York physicians including Dr. Philip LoPresti. During this period Dr. Cifarelli, in collaboration with others, became involved testing and developing the gastroscope, the medical device now commonly used to screen patients for colon cancer. In 1966, recognizing the dire need created by the Vietnam War for physicians in the military, Dr. Cifarelli voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Vietnam from 1966 through 1967, attaining the rank of Captain and serving as Chief of Medicine at the 67th Evac. Hospital in Quinon, Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Letter of Commendation for his service during the war. In December 1970 Dr. Cifarelli moved his wife and four children to California where his medical career flourished. Through the 1970's and 1980's Dr. Cifarelli served as Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff at several Orange County hospitals including Good Samaritan Hospital in Anaheim. At that time Dr. Cifarelli also began teaching clinical medicine at U.C. Irvine Medical School and at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP). He ultimately attained the rank of full clinical professor at UCI Medical School and at COMP and held those positions until his death. In 1979 he was named in the First Edition of "The Best Doctors of America". In the mid 1970's Dr. Cifarelli began attending night school at the Western State College of Law, while continuing his busy career as a physician during the day. He passed the bar and began practicing both law and medicine in 1979, becoming one of the first practicing physicians and attorneys in Orange County. He later moved his law practice to Santa Ana and continued to practice law, alongside his two sons, until shortly before his passing. Dr. Cifarelli's respect and admiration for military service never faded. In 1982 he re-joined the Army, in its reserve unit as a Lt. Colonel. Two years later he attained the rank of full Colonel and continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps through most of the 1990's. During that period he was named Chief of Medicine and later Commander of the 349th General Hospital in Los Angeles, a unit called to serve in the Persian Gulf War. He also commanded the 458th MASH Unit and later served as a Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General, obtaining a top secret clearance at the Pentagon. As the millennium arrived Dr. Cifarelli finally retired from the military. After a short semi-retirement in the late 1990's, Dr. Cifarelli returned to the practice of law around 2000. Dr. Cifarelli also served over 15 years as an Orange County Judge Pro Tem and was a popular figure in the halls and courtrooms of the Orange County Superior Court. Always driven by a love of education and philosophy, Dr. Cifarelli became actively involved with the American College of Legal Medicine, addressing cutting edge issues involving Bio-Ethics and the right to life. He ascended to the rank of President of the American College of Legal Medicine in 2005 and was honored with the organization's Gold Medal for lifetime achievement in March of 2008. Dr. Cifarelli was an avid tennis player and loved traveling. Over his lifetime he visited all corners of the World lecturing on medical-legal and bio-ethics issues to professionals and laymen alike. Dr. Cifarelli was Board Certified in three Medical Specialties. His primary practice was in the sub-specialty of Gastroenterology. Dr. Cifarelli lost his first wife Jean in 1988. Years later he remarried Barbara and remained married until his death. Even more than education, Dr. Cifarelli's first great love was family. He remained close with his four children and seven grandchildren throughout his life, practicing law alongside his two sons for years and regularly attending Sunday dinners at his daughters' homes. In addition to his second wife, he is survived by his children: Emilia Longo of Orange, Nina Longo of Corona, Phil Cifarelli of San Juan Capistrano and Tom Cifarelli of Laguna Niguel. He is also survived by his younger brother Dr. Albert V. Cifarelli of New York City, and sons-in-law John Longo, Ken Longo and daughter-in-law Dr. Lilian Cifarelli. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Candice, Amanda, Jeanine, Alex, Vincent, Michael and Angela. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Cifarelli's memory would be honored by donations in his name to the American College of Legal Medicine, 1100 E. Woodfield Road, Schamburg, IL 60173, checks payable to "ACLM." The field of medical-legal medicine, that is filled with extremely smart people, Philip may have been the smartest person I knew. But he had the gift of being able to talk to anyone, without coming off as a showoff intellectual. He could be extraordinarily down to earth, warm, and friendly despite being such a world-renowned expert in this field. I will miss his friendship.

There is a 'window' in the development of any child through which it can reach out and learn many things. No sooner has it opened though does it begin to slowly descend again. I thank whatever there is to thank for having been allowed to know Phil Cifarelli when we were both teen aged boys. It was not only Plane Geometry which he taught to me during those warm Summer afternoons, seated at a card table in the backyard of his parent's home in Jackson Heights, indeed he taught me much more. I learned -- from him -- to learn. Now, as an eighty year old mathematician who has tried to do for others what Phil did for me, I sat down one day and decided to find him, to tell him what he had done. I was too late. Phil had already stepped off this planet... No matter, it's something we all must do sooner or later. Thank you Phil. I think you must have known anyway.

PSC was an amazing man. I have never met someone who has accomplished so much in life. He was always in high spirits and a great person to learn from. I will miss his humming through the office and his funny stories. I will always remember this great man.

Dr. Cifarelli had a passion for people and for education that left a lasting impression on me at Western University of Health Sciences. Because of his guidance and insight in our Medical Jurisprudence core curriculum- and because of the enthusiasm and causes he championed- I, too, will become a physician attorney. It's been a goal of mine ever since his second lecture. My thoughts and prayers are with his family for this loving soul.

I just learned today about Phil's passing, when i called to seek his advise on a case I know would have interested him very much. I worked on a number of cases with Phil and know he was a tireless and effective advocate for the rights of patients and physicians. We worked together on a case to defend a physician accused of providing "too much" pain medication to a dying patient from losing his license; we were thrilled when the medical board reversed its decision to revoke the phyiscian's license. This case and others like it made it safer for physicians to treat pain aggressively. As a result, it is more likely that dying patients will get the care they need. I was so sad he could not come to the phone today. His gruff, booming voice will be missed. I feel bereft to have lost this wonderful colleague and champion.

Tom and Phil: Just heard from Arnie Schwartz about your dad's passing. I never met your dad, but because he (and you guys) worked with us at Mazursky Schwartz & Angelo I heard may stories and, yes, knew you 2, his sons - who turned out really great! Take care. I am sorry to hear about your loss.

PSC was a fantastic man! Although I had not seen him in several years, he always treated me as if I were family. He brought much happiness, laughter, and joy to many, never sacrificing one of those attributes for the other. Doc---you will be sorely missed.

I will truly miss this great man. He inspired me as a young physician to eventually become an attorney. At our annual legal medicine meetings, he always greeted me with a smile and made me feel comfortable with his stories about his early years in Queens, NY. But, what I will remember him most for was his strong sense of family. May God comfort the family during this time.

Both my wife and I had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Cifarelli during our years at COMP in the late 90’s. Clearly he was one of the very few who we remember for his energetic lecturing capability to hold 150+ student’s attention so readily. I still have his notes because he made an incredibly difficult subject so easy to understand. I can still hear him when he would tell a story and follow it with HOWEVEEEER…. and then switch subjects with a humorous twist.

We were sad to recently hear of his passing and wish his family our condolences.

I love and honor you Grandpa
With all my heart...Forever
You are a part of my happiness
Cherished and respected
My esteem for you...
It grew throughout my life
Your love wasn't valued for love's sake alone
To me, this love has become your legacy
It has transcended the life you lived
And has not only filled my heart with happy memories
But also has encouraged me to be better
To be more like the person you were
A person of love and kindness

Grandpa, you taught me so much, I am very blessed. I will love and miss you always, with every jingle of my heart <3

My grandpa meant so much to me. He was such an inspiration in my life, always encouraging me to continue my education. I always remember my grandpa saying how proud he was of me and that he believed in my success. There are countless things he taught me throughout the years but one that I will always reference is when my grandpa would ask me "Jeanine, who's the best" and I would say "I am grandpa" and he would say "Who's better than you" and I would say "Nobody!" and my grandpa would say "That's right Jeanine". All my love and affection, your grandaughter, Jeanine XXOO

My grandfather was a brilliant and beautiful man. If you were to ask me to write down all the things he has influenced me with there wouldn't be enough time or space because I can't even describe the things he has accomplished and the things he has over come throughout his life, they are infinite. He always told me to never give up and to follow my dreams. So even though he is gone, i will always love & remember the man he once was, always and forever. Alex, loving grandaughter xoxo

My Grandfather was an amazing human being. His extraordinary love of life and appeal that so many people came to know and love. Although, he wore many hats Dr, Lawyer, Army Colonel, and a professor.... he was my grandfather. I was so fortunate to have had him in my life...He taught me so much over the last 24 yrs, lessons and thoughts that will forever stay with me. His love of education, educating others and to never stop learning. He felt that ones character is more important than material possessions. He truly believed... to have a balanced life and nothing to the extreme can create a fair and steady being. He was the greatest family man, a very special and generous person. He was courageous beyond words especially over the last 8 months of his life....He was on a higher level then most and I appreciated him for that. He was a real person. My Grandfather was the very essence of love, honor, compassion, and style...he served as a symbol of being the best you can be. I will always give thanks for the life of a man I am so proud to be able to call my Grandfather. Whose character, strength, wisdom, and love will never be extinguished from our hearts and minds. I will love and miss you always.

I was very sad to hear of Dr. Cifarelli's passing. I can only say that as a physician moving to so cal in 1979 Dr. Cifarelli was one of the most comforting people that I met. He welcomed me like he had known me all of my life. He was extremly nice to me and supported my partnership with Dr. Berkowitz. Throughout the years I've had only brief contact with him...but I have always remembered his warm personal touch. Many Dr's are unexcepting to newcomers but Dr. Cifarelli was exactly the opposite. He made my partnership with Dr. Berkowitz and my move to So Ca very comforting. I sincerely regret not being able to make the service and show my respects. I have always felt that Dr. Cifarelli was a great physician and a credit to the medical community. My deepest regrets to his family.
Warmest personal regards

I remember Dr. Cifarelli and his inspiring and highly important lectures to us as medical students. He was captivating in his lectures, and instilled hope to us students to not be intimidated by the legal aspects (aka lawsuits) which were an inevitable part of the medical profession. I am sorry to hear of his passing. I feel privileged to have been able to hear his lectures and learn from him.

As a graduate of COMP, I will ALWAYS remember Dr Cifarelli for his compassion and his dedication to our education. I still go over his notes every now and then to review legal aspects dealing with medicine. I will also remember him for his dedication to our service members. He was proud to be a retired Colonel and always spoke so highly of his time with the US Army.

He is a great role-model and I am sure this emulates in all the people he has lectured over his many years of teaching.

He will be greatly missed

Dr. Cifarelli has been a College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) professor since the school’s beginning in 1978. He was always proud of the accomplishment of WesternU and his long-term relationship with COMP. He was very pleased to wear the 25yr pin that Dr. Pumerantz had presented to him and told me that he wore it with pride. He said he always looked forward to teaching his course on legal medicine to the 2nd year COMP class. He will be greatly missed!!

I was telling a young lady who works at our office that "you will never meet a more accomplished man"...and that is true when speaking of "PSC" or Dr. Cifarelli...I will remember him for his accomplishments of course, but I will most remember him for his boundless enthusiasm--on most any topic. He would love to hear me rattle on about USC or pro tennis and some of my poker stories too...he already is missed tremendously at our office.

I met Dr Cifarelli in the early 80's, having gone to school with his son. Our paths seldom crossed and I rarely saw him but he still made an impact on me, and I thought of him often. He would always seek me out when I was in his company and corner me into a provacative conversation. Challenging my viewpoints, trying to make me stretch from an intellectual standpoint. He had the patience to be a great listener and could espouse on a wide array of topics. Looking back on his great list of accomplishments and achievements, its strikes me his biggest one is the way he raised his children and the legacy he has passed on. I'm saddened that old man Cifarelli has passed on, the world is a bit weaker for it, but the heavens, well the heavens just received a great ombudsman, someone that will fill their days with splendid conversation and that makes me a bit jealous. My deepest sympathies to all who knew him...
