Ria Joyce Carlis

September 24, 1939 - December 16, 2020 The world lost an extraordinary woman on December 16, 2020 when Ria Gerson Carlis passed away peacefully surrounded by family at her residence in Santa Barbara, CA.Ria's life began in 1939 in Los Angeles, the second of two daughters to Eva and Maier Gerson. Her childhood was joyfully shared with her older sister Marlene Gerson LaZar who remained her best friend throughout life. At the age of 19 she met Marvin Carlis and they went on to spend 60 wonderful years together creating a remarkable life, raising three beautiful children and traveling the world. Their love is what many would call straight out of a story book, filled with never ending care, support and an emphasis on compassion.Ria's three daughters, Dani Carlis Ison, Jamie Carlis Green and Cristie Carlis Odle, were fortunate to grow up with such an empathetic and loving role model who was a best friend and mother in one. Beloved grandmother to her 4 beautiful granddaughters and handsome grandson, Ria put not only her children but her grandchildren's needs above her own and would do anything to bring a smile to their face and make them feel accepted and loved. We will remember Ria for her intoxicating smile, willingness to be goofy, and power to bring light and joy into every aspect of life. Whoever met Ria became her friend instantly, with many friendships spanning beyond 75 years. Ria holds a very special place in the heart of everyone blessed enough to be a part of her well lived life.
