Commander George E. Brainerd, US Navy, Retired
October 31, 2024
As his roommate for all four years at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, I was profoundly influenced and rewarded as I progressed to graduation with his help and companionship. An amazing coincidence occurred years later while he happened to be on Summer Naval Reserve Duty at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island that occurred simultaneously with my wedding to Maryellen Hancock, who was a Chief of Engineering at Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics at nearby Groton, Connecticut. Prior to the wedding that he, of course attended, I arranged for him to meet the bride while I was at work. She picked him up at the War College who he immediately befriended by helping her set up our Honeymoon Cottage (making beds, etc.) among the historic mansions on the waterfront in Newport. He of course attended the wedding and later took the bride and groom to a scrumptious lunch with one of my daughters (from a previous marriage that occurred after graduation at USNA 20 years earlier). His sense of humor has lasted down these many years (46 to be exact) as last night this same daughter repeated his humorous story word for word, perfectly nailing the punchline bringing back to life that wonderful event and a perfect example of Bob's amazing sense of humor.

Bob Currie and I were lifelong friends beginning as roommates for four years at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Those four years were critical for my success in life that I attribute to Bob and our other roommate Walt Baskin. I could not feel more privileged to know both of these great men as fabulous life friends. Bob was a person of sterling character and a brilliant student who was a great benefit to me who occasionally tutored me, especially in electrical engineering. His example as a leader and dear friend were priceless. RIP.
