1938 - 2026
Jul 10, 1938 - Mar 1, 2026
Harry Owen Currie, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, in Edmond, OK. Born on July 10, 1938, in Shawnee, OK, Harry lived a life marked by faith, service, and dedication to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family and his community.
Harry graduated from Shawnee High School before continuing his education at Oklahoma State University, where he earned a degree in Business. He also spent time studying at Oklahoma Baptist University, further broadening his academic experience.
On February 17, 1961, he married the love of his life, Francis Joan Currie and together they had two children, Tracy and Scott. They have shared 65 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, dedication and joy.
Harry's faith was central to his life. In 1962, he gave his life to the Lord and faithfully served Him ever since. His unwavering devotion inspired those around him and guided him in all aspects of his personal and professional endeavors.
In 1965, Harry and Joan embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by founding Bags Inc., a small business in Del City, OK. Their hard work and vision led to the expansion of the company with the addition of Poly Films in 1985. This year marked the company's remarkable milestone of 60 years as a successful business serving the community-a testament to Harry's dedication and leadership.
Harry's passion for public service was evident throughout his life. From 1971 to 1975, he served as Mayor of Del City, where he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of its residents. In 1996, Governor Frank Keating appointed him as Oklahoma County Commissioner for District 2. At the time of his appointment, Governor Keating praised Harry for his integrity, common-sense judgment, strong management skills, and business expertise-qualities that defined his leadership.
A man deeply committed to his community's growth and well-being, Harry played a pivotal role in founding the Oklahoma Railroad Museum. Serving as board president for an impressive 18 years, he helped build the museum from the ground up into a cherished institution. His contributions extended further through appointments to significant state boards: the Oklahoma Mental Health Board by Governor David Boren and the Oklahoma Water Resources Board by Governor Frank Keating.
Above all else, Harry cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Francis Joan Currie; their daughter, Tracy McGehee and son-in-law, Kevin McGehee; their son, Scott Currie and daughter in law Brett Currie; and seven grandchildren: Heather Merrell, Krista Law, Caleb McGehee, Sawyer Currie, Cassidy Chlouber, Brock Currie, and Cynthia Burkhart as well as 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Lahoma and Charles Currie and his brothers Richard Currie and Tom Currie.
Harry's legacy is one of faithfulness-to God, family, community service-and an enduring commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Because of Jesus and the salvation He offers, we know He is with the Lord, and we find comfort in the hope only He can bring. May that hope and his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
