Robert James Obituary

May 14, 1945 - July 25, 2025 Robert Logan James died July 25, 2025 after a long illness. Born to Marie Logan James and Robert Judson James on May 14, 1945, Bob was raised in Houston, TX. He showed an early aptitude for science and trouble-making, sometimes combining them in home-made rockets. He attended Lamar High School and Tulane University. He joined the Peace Corps in 1967 and worked in Ghana for two years with his first wife Nancy Easton and their pet monkey, Frodo. He trained at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and did a psychiatry residency at UCLA. He bought a house in Mar Vista and spent Sundays in the garden. Over 40 years in private practice, he helped patients gain the stability and insight needed to achieve lives of meaning. He earned a Ph.D. in psychoanalysis at the SoCal Psychoanalytic Institute in 1989. He taught for and served as the president of the New Center for Psychoanalysis. He loved cooking, music, skiing, fishing, astronomy and birdwatching. He retired in 2015. His wife Darlene lovingly cared for him at home for many years. He will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, and sense of fun. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Brail James; two daughters, Pearl James and Elissa James; a son-in-law, Leon Sachs; a grandchild, Chloe James Sachs; and beloved Texas cousins. Donations can be made to the ACLU. A memorial will be held in Houston.

Bob was a kind intelligent man that I enjoyed seeing to prepare his tax returns. He truly cared about others and through his actions he heavily contributed to the good guy side of the ledger.
