Robert Maguire Obituary
April 18, 1935 - May 18, 2021 Robert F. Maguire, III will long be remembered as the man who created the LA Skyline. So many television shows, movies and local news backdrops feature this iconic LA vision, including the US Bank Tower. The LA Times referred to him as the dominating "swashbuckler" of real estate. He saved the LA Public Library. The Maguire Gardens sit adjacent to the library. He was the original developer of Playa Vista, now known as Silicon Beach. As Board President, Rob was instrumental in the obtaining of the May Co. building for LACMA, which will house the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. He was indeed that swashbuckler, yet so much more. He loved his family, number one. He is survived by his children, Robin (Marc Schaberg), Peter (Annabelle), Alec (Jennifer) and Jennie (Fritz Burkart); his step-children, Molly (Robert Urnecli) and Ryan King. He was affectionately known as Poppie to his grandchildren: Hailey, Piper and Gracie Gates; Ramsey Lands; Seaborne and Joe Maguire; Maura, Effie and Birdie Maguire; Sidney Dillon King; Liam and Lily Urnecli. He is survived by his brother Gil (Robin), sister-in-law Kelly Day, Paige Reddan (Jimmy Bennett), Polly (Joel Lewitz) and brother-in-law Jeff Reddan (Dawn). Finally, he is survived by his wife, Laurie, with whom he lived life to the fullest. He loved to dance and he was so good at it! He was well-known for wearing his 30 pound kilt with full Scottish/Irish regalia and for singing Christmas carols at midnight mass (loudly). Rob leaves behind countless true friends, extended family, business associates (especially Arlene, Kristos, Steve, Peter) and so many people in downtown parking garages for whom he fought for higher wages. Nearly every parking attendant in downtown greeted him with respect and a warm smile. While his father (The Irish Moses, responsible for flying 70,000 Jewish Yemenites, Iranians and Iraqis to safety in Israel) was away flying, Rob attended boarding school in Paris. He grew up fast, smoked Gauloises and was quite the charmer, or so he says. Rob (Rascal Robbie to some) graduated from UCLA. He cheered for the Bruins but also for the Ducks, having been raised in Oregon. He loved to fly, taught by his father and his crew of pilots at the age of 13. Skiing was a favorite, especially in Sun Valley until he wrapped himself around one too many trees. In addition to rowing out into the ocean, surfing, of course, was his major passion which his children (and now grandchildren) now embrace. He enjoyed his shaken vodka martini at 5:00 every day, so CHEERS to you, Rob, for a life extraordinarily well lived and loved.
