Robert Re Obituary

Re, Robert G.
July 24, 1939 - September 11, 2012
A native of White Plains, New York but a longtime resident of Southern California, Robert Re passed away on September 11 at his home in Palm Springs following a lengthy battle with cancer. Robert, often called Bobby by family and friends, moved to New York after graduating high school and became active in various retail businesses. In the 1960s he became Manager of the Museum Shop at the Museum of Natural History, which helped him gain an immense knowledge of Native American art and artifacts. Eventually he left the Museum to open a shop of his own in San Francisco. Five years later, in 1977, Robert moved to Los Angeles and became active in the business of stationery and greeting cards. For several years, he acted as manager of Alexander's Stationery, the highly regarded and popular store in Hollywood. Following the sale of Alexander's he became a sales rep for several different greeting card companies and then retired to Palm Springs in 2001. A man of refined taste in art and music, Robert had an avid interest in classic cars and also nurtured a secret "guilty pleasure"...collecting videos and posters for trashy movies of the 40s, 50s and 60s. A good-natured, even-tempered man, Robert was fun to be around. He had amassed and kept a large circle of friends from all the phases of his life; he will be greatly missed. He is survived by a brother, George and a sister-in-law, Michele; also, a nephew, George and a niece, Maia.
Funeral services were held in private. Memorial services in both Palm Springs and Los Angeles are being planned. Those wishing to honor Robert's memory may make a contribution to the American Cancer Society and request an acknowledgement to be sent to: George Re, 15 Spring Street, Pawling, New York, 12564.
