Rosalie Lincir Obituary

Lincir, Rosalie Ann
September 16, 1922 - July 12, 2011
Rosalie Ann Lincir (nee Figge), ballet dancer, died on the morning of July 12. The cause was old age. She was 88.

A long-time resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Lincir owned and operated a ballet school in San Pedro with her husband, Tomislav Bradanovic Lincir, who survives her.

Born in Boonville, Missouri, to a large family, Lincir began to study ballet seriously at the age of six when she moved with her family, in the early 1930s, to Hollywood, where she attended the Hollywood Professional School. Afterward, she was a member of several ballet companies including the Okransky Ballet Co., the San Francisco Ballet Co., and Michio Ito's Dance Group. She danced with Maria & Marjorie Tallchief and Bronislava Ninjinska, among others.

In the months before America entered the Second World War, she married and began a family. Though she always maintained a sense of hierarchy -- a belief in the moral and artistic superiority of ballet to other forms of dance -- she reluctantly ended her career in ballet and danced in more popular, commercial forms, appearing on stage at the Greek Theater, Hollywood Bowl, and Shrine Auditorium and in several films of the period, including Step Lively with Frank Sinatra and George Murphy, the latter with whom she shared the final dance scene of the film.

Throughout the 40s and 50s, she and her husband, a dance team, worked in television, dancing on the Spade Cooley show on KTLA with Stan Chambers, and performing in the Radebough Melodiers. The Lincirs danced at the Cocoanut Grove, Tom Brenamen's, the Biltmore Hotel, Florentine Gardens, Paramount, and RKO Studios, among other venues. After the war, the couple performed extensively abroad, in Europe and throughout Mexico.

In later life, Lincir taught ballet, collected a library of books on ballet, wrote her memoirs and several children's books, and presided, with pleasure and pride, over a growing family.

In addition to her husband of seventy years, she is survived by her three sons, Thomas, Matt (Wanda), and Mark (Clarisse); several nieces and nephews; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grand children.

I took my first ballet classes at "Rosalie and Alva's" when I was six years old. My deepest condolences to the family.

Dear Alva,
My heart goes out to you and your sons as you mourn the loss of your dearest Rosalie. She was such a gift to San Pedro, bringing the joy of dance, a sense of humor, and life-long lessons to her many pupils. I will never forget my first class at the studio 52 years ago- Alva taught and Rosalie took class. I had no idea who she was, but when she put her braided red ponytail in her teeth and went whirling accross the floor in chenne turns, I told myself, " I want to be just like her!"
Rosalie was a guiding influence for me from then on. The discipline I learned from her continues in my life today. I loved her dearly.

God blessed her with a long life. She dances with Him into eternity. We remember her here in all our steps.

To the Lincir Family:

It was my honor to be able to write the Rosalie and Alva story for San Pedro Magazine - Rosalie, take your dancing shoes and spirit to heaven, and show them how it's done.

Rosalie taught many of the San Pedro girls. Her flaming red hair and lovely moves instilled the love of dance and the arts. I still imagine she and Tom making corrections on the dance floor. My sympathy to Tom and her family. Anne Hochreich Price

I would like to note and extend my sincerest of condolences to Miss Rosalie’s dear husband and wonderful family…
Miss Rosalie promoted a standard of excellence which is impossible to duplicate: she was a mix of the majesty of old Hollywood and the discipline of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Her dignified posture commanded an immediate respect of her authority while the twinkle her cornflower blue eyes cushioned the discomfort of our barre exercise. I credit her influence with my posture, a lifelong love of the art of ballet, and with my choice of hair dye...it's “Rosalie Red” of course...Thank you Miss Rosalie!

I honor Rosalie's beauty and teaching. Studying with Rosalie and Alva many years ago was an honor. At 73 I am still dancing though not on stage. The love of dance has never left me because of Rosalie and Tom. My sympathy to her children
