Rosalyn Binning Obituary

November 20, 1928 - December 6, 2015 Dr. Rosalyn Lucille Binning, 87, of Newport Beach, a retired anesthesiologist, passed peacefully on Sunday, December 6, 2015, surrounded by the love of her family. Dr. Binning was born November 20, 1928, in El Paso, Texas. As a child her family moved out to Southern California where she resided the rest of her life. Dr. Binning was a pioneer in her field, having been one of the first female anesthesiologists to practice in Southern California. After retiring, Dr. Binning volunteered her services to charities such as the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa, Las Reinas Auxiliary; The Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Camelot Chapter; and UCI Town and Gown. Rosalyn was an avid traveler and a citizen of the world. She traveled to over 100 countries on all 7 continents and shared this joy of travel with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending her leisure time socializing with her "Birthday Girls", many friends at the Elks lodge, Balboa Bay Club, and Lido Isle Yacht Club. Dr. Binning leaves to cherish her memory: her two daughters, Valerie L. Boston and Karen L. Binning; her sister, Christine Otto; five grandchildren, Rosey M. Barry, Chelsea Ann Fakehany, Linda L. Freeman, Thomas C. Freeman, Sean M. Freeman and three great-grandchildren, Savannah Rae Fakehany, Chanelle Sky Fakehany, and James King Fakehany. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 23, 2016, at 2pm at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach.

Rosalyn (I loved this name and refused to call her Lynn) was my older cousin, most admired by my two brothers and me. She always had an elegant air about her even when wearing her operating scrubs. She had to put up with the teasing of her three uncles (one of whom was W.C. Keith, my father) who were in their teens when she was a child. She heroically and with strength, dignity and charm managed to wrap them around her fingers. Maybe this is where she developed her tough skin so that she could succeed in the male dominated world of surgery. Although I don't think of Rosalyn as a feminist, she certainly made sure that the females with whom she worked were treated politely and fairly, especially in the OR. We Keith descendants (sister, children and cousins) often talked about the strength that was passed down to us from our hard working pioneer Keith ancestors, especially Mattie Keith, a widow who raised Rosalyn's mother as well as four sons by herself after the early death of her husband Lorenzo Keith. We will miss our lovely, strong cousin until we meet again.
