Sol Leshin Obituary

Leshin, Sol Alex was born on February 10, 1913 in Vancouver, Bristish Columbia. He passed away in his home in Llano, California on December 30, 2002.
His greatest passion was to merge soil, seeds, water and sunshine into green fields of alfalfa and grain hay. He had beautiful ranches filled with top quality hay in Lancaster and Daggett. He especially appreciated his great friendship with Joe and Sue Harter of Daggett who helped him fulfill his dreams in both places. Sol spent most of his youth in Los Angeles, son of Alec and Rose Leshin. He had one younger brother, Ralph, who died in the 1930's, in a farming accident. Sol was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley where he was awarded a Master's Degree in Soil Sciences. More recently, he was awarded an Honorary Ph.D from UCLA for the research he supported. He married Evelyn Hellman (who died in 1983) on August 17, 1939 and built a life on the Westside of Los Angeles where Sol was very active in community affairs including Indian Guides, YMCA, Friends of the Brentwood Library, Brentwood Youth House and the Boy Scouts. Sol and Evelyn had six children. They are Janet Lyman, the late Suzanne Bluthenthal, Margaret McGuan, Constance Leshin-Williams, Ralph Leshin, and Robert Leshin. There are also twelve wonderful grandchildren in the family: Matt and Allison Lyman, Stacy, David and Evelyn Bluthenthal, Lilia Schwartz, John and Caitlin McGuan, Vaughan Alexander Williams, and Ashley, Andrew and Carson Leshin. You may think of Sol Leshin when you pass a pretty green field of hay on a bright and sunny day. At the family's request, services will be private. Donations may be made out to U.C. Regents, c/o S. Aroni, UCLA Perloff Hall, Room B315, Box 951467, UCLA, Los Angeles, 90095-1467.

I remember Sol from his many years in Scouting with the old Crescent Bay Council in West Los Angeles. I also remember all of his support for Camp Josepho.

He will be missed.
