Stephen Pollack Obituary

Stephen Lawrence Pollack
February 8, 1965 - January 21, 2012
Stephen Lawrence Pollack, light and love of all of our lives, passed away at home on Saturday morning January 21, 2012 after a decade long battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Stephen was the sixth, last and best child born to Sheldon and Norine Pollack. He attended Crossroads School and graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in Marketing & Communications, though Stephen might argue that he learned more about what's important in life from his fraternity brothers at Kappa Sigma than he did from college. Stephen spent nearly twenty years at Turner Broadcasting, where he rose to the position of Vice President CNN Sales & Marketing. For all his tenure, he was admired and respected by his colleagues. Stephen's sense of humor was legendary and he took every opportunity to entertain the crowd. Alternatively, he could ponder and discuss the mysteries and absurdities of the universe endlessly. He loved words and devoured books. He was relentlessly curious, even about his final journey. Stephen loved music, gardening, architecture and, most of all, his family. He loved nature in all of her forms and had a lifelong love affair with the eastern Sierra, where his ashes will be scattered at his request. He was a fickle athlete - equally devoted to surfing, skateboarding, hiking, snowboarding and mountain biking. Stephen is survived by his beloved wife Vivian, precocious and beautiful two and a half year old daughter Audrey Jade, brother John (Terri), sisters Eileen, Shelly (Mark), Maureen and Barbara. Also mourning his loss are nephews Justin (Kim) and Samuel and nieces Jacklyn, Anna, Sarah, Rachel, Sophie, his devoted mother-in-law Mimi and the best friends that any boy (man) could hope for in this life. If we are here to love and be loved then Stephen fulfilled his destiny brilliantly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephen's memory to Audrey Jade Pollack (education fund), UCLA Brain Cancer Research or Defender's of the Wildlife. Memorial services will be held at University Synagogue in Brentwood on Sunday, February 12th at 4:00pm. To honor Stephen's life, escape to the wilderness, take a deep breath and gaze out at all of the natural beauty surrounding you. If you're looking for Stephen, that's where you'll find him.

Stephen was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met as a neighbor. He would always make an effort to try and help me in anyway he could. He would give me ideas for my garden and leave me letters for things I could do to make it easy. He will be forever missed.

So sad to learn of the loss of this much loved young man. I only remember the boy, but have thought of him, and the Pollack family, often over the years. My heart breaks for you all.

Dear Eileen, John, Shelly, Maureen & Barbara,

We are deeply saddened over the tragic loss of your beloved brother, Stephen. We just learned of his leaving earth, today, or we would have attended his memorial service. Stephen was a super-special guy who radiated sunshine and knew how to roll with the punches no matter what came his way. He had a brilliant mind, loved life and had a wonderful sense of humor. Stephen was an exceptional earth angel who now has joined all the angels in Heaven. Our hearts go out with deepest empathy to all the grieving loved ones he left behind. He will be missed forever.

Wow! I just heard of Stephen's passing this morning. It's been a long time since I have seen him during my days at Turner, but I have definitely never forgotten him. He was always such a calming presence in a sometimes hectic atmosphere. I know that all those who worked for Stephen, admired him deeply and respected him greatly. My heart goes out to his family and I am just really sad to hear this. This piece in the LA Times is a beautiful tribute to him and what he was all about. RIP Stephen.

We met by chance hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains and from that meeting onward, we enjoyed everything about Stephen! His love of nature, and great sense of humor, his business sense, his love of family and friends and the world itself! We enjoyed his thoughts on New Zealand as a place he would love to live. When Stephen first was hospitalized almost a decade ago, as I sat in the waiting room with his family there was so much love in that room that is beyond description. A love and warmth that I shall always remember. When we were first introduced to Vivian by Stephen, he beamed with delight and that beam will live forever for her and his daughter. When we think of Stephen, we SMILE!!! He brought such joy to us and to his family and friends. Today we will not only remember Stephen in a memorial service with his family and friends yet he will be kept alive in our hearts and all nature forever. Stephen, we will see you on the trails in Heaven, our friend!

Steve was responsible for some of the best times and biggest laughs I had in high school. (For that record, that does not include the time we "borrowed" his mom's sporty Mazda RX-7 and took it to the beach.) He was a great guy and a good friend back then, and I know that you, his family and friends, will miss him very much.

Words fall short at times like these. Stephen's passing was decades too short. He was a wonderful co-worker and friend, someone I feel privileged to have known. He will be missed.

One of the best men and greatest friends the world will ever know. The beauty and fortune of Steve's presence in our lives fills my heart with joy and gratitude. Among us still - the Great Poulan goes on... energy and love like that does not perish - only changes a bit. Thanks for the love and lessons... Thank you for everything. Clouds, ocean, snow and sand... see you there my brother... smiling.

What a fitting tribute to a tremendous person and a life well lived. I was drawn to Steve the moment that we met during U of U fraternity Rush in 1983. So charming, smart, hilariously funny - he out Bill Murrayed Bill Murray - adventurous and just an all around great guy. Steve leaves a legacy and touched so many people; this guy included. Vivian, family and friends ... So sorry for your loss.

Mr. and Mrs. Pollack, Vivan and family,
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Steve. I attended college with him. He was our Anchor Man at Delta Gamma, and by far the best one we ever had! He was such a warm, funny, genuine person. The memories from college are endless, and I will treasure those thoughts forever. Please remember that death ends a life, not a relationship. The impact he had upon this earth was immeasurable. I am very sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Kelly McBride Redican
