I met Steven in 2004. He was looking to buy a condo in Playa Del Rey and we became friends during the course of our home hunting. I was also working in Arcadia and learned from my time there that he was a gifted sports writer and was genuinely interested in all facets of horse racing at Santa Anita. He knew the horses, the trainers, the jockeys , the owners and, of course, the track. I loved listening to his stories.
After he retired, I talked with him daily during his ritual of collecting mail, eating lunch at Cafe Milan and walking to and from his home. And I do mean daily. Steven was gifte;, an intelligent, interesting and opinionated voice. God keep you, my old friend. I hope there is a racetrack in heaven. If there is, God has himself a sportswriter.
