Sunny Lowy Obituary

LOWY, Sunny Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 30, at her home in Westwood. Born August 6, 1914 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she moved to Chicago as a child with her parents, brothers and sisters. She attended Illinois Institute of Technology, where she met Mortimer Lowy, who became her beloved husband of 64 years. Shortly after WWII, they moved to Los Angeles and started a family. She was a devoted supporter of the arts and progressive causes. As one of the founders of the Downey Museum of Art and Art School, she organized the annual "Art Unlimited" exhibition. After moving to Westwood in 1964, she organized seminars in dance therapy and was active in Women for Legislative Action. She also generously supported the Geffen Playhouse, L.A. Chamber Orchestra, Strawberry Creek Music Festival, and Wild Ginger Philharmonic. She was an elegant and gracious hostess who loved the opportunity to gather with others at happy occasions. With her open heart and compassion, she played a vital role in the lives of countless friends and family. She is survived by her loving husband, Mortimer; daughter Barbara (Dr. Simon) Gamer; son Steven (Jill) Lowy; grandchildren Jason Gamer, Amanda Gamer (Jonathan Weinbach), Dylan and Zofia Lowy; sister Theresa (Harry) Ostrow; brother Abe (Sylvia) Duban; sister-in-law Roseblanche Schwartz; brother-in-law Jay (Brenda) Lowy; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cherished friends. Services were held July 3, 2006 at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills.
