Thomas Ackland Obituary

Thomas B. Ackland, born November 1940, took his last flight and went west on January 16, 2025. Tom was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended University School, received his bachelor's and master's degree from Dartmouth College, and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He then joined the United States Navy and after four years returned to civilian life as a Lieutenant. Tom attended Case Western University Law School, serving on the Law Review and graduating Order of the Coif in 1970. Returning to California, he practiced law with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher for several years, and then was one of the founding partners of Barger and Wolen. Tom was a member of the California Club and the Manhattan Beach Country Club while living in the Los Angeles area.
In 1967 he met Karen Smith in San Diego, and they married in 1968 and lived a happy, busy life for 56 years. They lived in Manhattan Beach for 37 years and then moved to La Quinta, California and he enjoyed 16 years having traded the sands of the beach for the sands of the Coachella Valley.
Tom was loved by our godson, Jon, and his family. He was known as Grandpa Tom. A title he wore with such pride.
In 1972, Tom had the desire to gain his private airplane license and owned a Cessna 182, and then a Twin-Engine Cessna 340, but his favorite was flying his 1943 Stearman Biplane. He could be seen flying over many areas of the South Bay and the Coachella Valley. He enjoyed flying for the Palm Springs Air Museum.
Tom served on several boards while living in Los Angeles. But have no doubt, his membership in Quiet Birdman both in the LA Hangar and Palm Desert Hangar were very special to him. The fellowships he made as a member of QB gave him immense pleasure and one which Karen will always be thankful that he had as such an important part of his life.
Until the last few years, they traveled the world and experienced many amazing places in Europe, Central & South America, Africa, India, Nepal to name a few, and visiting many dear friends all over the country. No matter where he went, Tom would make friends which lasted his lifetime.
Please remember Tom as having a life well lived.

Roger Bloomfield CWRU Law '74, Dartmouth P'99

October 5, 2025

Tom was my classmate at CWRU Law Class of 1970. While Vietnam era military service delayed my graduation until 1974, we spend the first two years together. My granddaughters all were born in Newport Beach and my daughter worked in Manhattan Beach -- each visit brought thoughts of Tom. His cohort of Navy vets at the Law School were exemplary students. Reading his obituary was my first indication that he was a Dartmouth graduate. I have a Dartmouth '99 daughter and we live in proximity to Dartmouth now. Those were connections we never explored. I am glad he lived a full and active life. He was a fine gentleman in 1970 and did not depart from that course. News of his passing just came in the Law School's magazine.
