William Seward Obituary

June 26, 1958 - January 14, 2022 William Evan "Bill" Seward passed away January 14th at his home in Boerne, Texas at the age of 63 after a long and valiant fight against cancer. Bill is survived by his loving wife Cheri, daughters Sara and Emma and son John Patrick.
In his life, Bill would answer to any number of greetings including "Billy", "Bill", "Coach" and "Dad".
He was "Billy" to his mom, dad, brothers and sisters and many childhood pals who would remain great friends throughout his life.
He was "Bill" when he attended Notre Dame High School and Loyola Marymount where the seeds of his very successful broadcasting career were sown.
His "Coach" nickname was well earned. He was the youngest head football coach (age 23) in the CIF at St. Bernard's High School. His teams always made the CIF playoffs.
But it was the "Dad" sobriquet that meant the most to him. Anyone who spoke with him in the last 25 years knew of the deep love and burning pride that he had for his three children.
Bill's broadcasting career actually began at LMU radio station, KXLU, where he called the Lions sports events. That led a journey that would take Bill to an award-winning career that included major Los Angeles radio stations, KNX, KFWB and KFI and TV Sports anchor work at KCBS, KNBC, NBC Universal and ESPN.
Bill was a consummate broadcast professional whose versatility and ability to adapt led to him calling events in two different Olympic Games and doing national play-by-play for sports like rugby, winter sports, horse racing and many others.
And no summary of Bill's life would be complete without noting his acting and voice-over talents. He appeared in feature films and television shows and was voice-over talent for many national and regional advertising campaigns.
But the full circle of Bill's remarkable life always comes back to his wife Cheri and their children and they are inviting those who knew and loved Bill to join them at a Celebration of Life at St. Francis de Sales School Auditorium in Sherman Oaks on Saturday February 26th from 2:00-to-5:00 p.m.

He was my football coach at St. Bernard High School. He helped shaped me to the man I am today, as I was the football team captain. I am shocked and sadden by his passing. RIP coach - Todd West Class of 84 - St. Bernard HS

Had the opportunity to know and work with Bill while we were students at LMU along with our friend Terry Runzler, and sports information director Barry Zepel.
We all worked together on getting LMU basketball on local cable TV back at the start of the great basketball era at LMU in the 1980s.

Bill had an amazing on air style that combined excellent voice, outstanding broadcasting skills and with a special relaxed and enjoyable style.

His deadpan dry wit and humor always kept you guessing and laughing.

We are also proud of Bill`s amazing success in his long broadcasting career. He earned it. He worked hard. We all often wonder how good this amazingly talented man would´ve been if he had you stayed in football or baseball coaching or into the movie industry as an actor. .... or in his love horse racing .In each of these cases, he was very successful. But, broadcasting aside sounds like his greatest success was as a family man with his wife and children. There´s no better gauge of character in a man´s life when he has his family at the top of his priority list.

I understand he fought as valiant battle against cancer and did it in a humble, non-self-serving manner.
A truly class act.

May God bless him and especially his beautiful family.
Mario Palladini, Terry Runzler, Barry Zepel.... and hundreds of others.

I first met Bill at LMU when he was the voice of the Lions. Then, many years later he became a colleague as he returned to his Alma Mater, Notre Dame High School, to teach. He was a tremendously nice guy and well-liked by all.
