Charles Connors Obituary

Charles left this world for the next surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Evelyn, three children, Jeanette, Mike, and Dave, six grandchildren and 2 1/2 great grandchildren. His commitment to his family never wavered.Chuck was born in Holtville, CA on February 24, 1932, the second son of Ira and James Connors. Most of his life was spent in Long Beach, California between a very small street named Eliot Lane and building a community with his family on Montair Avenue. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War after graduating from Wilson High School and his draft letter came in the mail a few months later. He chose the Air Force hoping to repair planes, but instead worked in encryption. He spent a year training in San Antonio, Texas before being deployed to Japan for three years. Although he spoke little of his time in the service, he would say he served a precise "3 years, 9 months and 23 days." He climbed Mount Fuji while serving in Japan and cracked a major code for the Air Force. He returned to Long Beach and married Evelyn Ridgeway in 1956. Soon after, he started working for the Port of Long Beach as a draftsman while studying civil engineering at Cal State Long Beach, graduating in 1964. In his 32 years at the Port of Long Beach he worked his way up to Chief Harbor Engineer and then Deputy Executive Director. He oversaw major expansion at the Port during his tenure and traveled the world extensively. As much as he loved his time working at the Port, family and faith always came first. To build excitement for summer trips, each January he would open maps of the United States and point to State and National Parks to target for family camping vacations. Yosemite was one of his favorites. Chuck was a man of strong faith throughout his life, drawing strength and joy from his church communities. Chuck will be remembered as a humble, moral, and ethical leader, as it was always difficult to pry any stories out of him about his time at the Port or Air Force, his family will continue to look to him as an example of honesty and dedication to those he loves.

Chuck Connors was a guiding light in my early career. He worked with 3 generations of my family but I consider him more of a friend than someone I worked with. Everything the others have said is very true and I won´t repeat. I have a personal "Hall of Fame" that very few friends and acquaintances are in; Chuck has been there for years. He not only taught me business acumen but also taught me the art of finesse on the racket ball court. His life on earth left a lot for our society to see and enjoy. He will truly be missed.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to this today, as we mourn the passing of our dear friend Chuck. As we celebrate his life and cherish the memories we shared, it becomes clear that Chuck's vibrant smile and warm greetings will forever be etched in our hearts.

Chuck had an incredible ability to uplift everyone around him with his infectious smile. Whether it was a simple "hello", his genuine warmth and kindness brightened our days. His smile was a reflection of his beautiful spirit, radiating joy and leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

When we remember Chuck, it is impossible not to recall the countless wonderful memories we shared together. Chuck had a unique way of connecting with people and making every moment special.

Through our shared experiences, Chuck brought us closer as we can all attest to the countless moments of joy, laughter, and shared happiness that Chuck brought into our lives.

As we navigate this difficult time, let us hold on to the cherished memories we have of Chuck. Let his smile be a guiding light that inspires us to embrace life with the same warmth, kindness, and enthusiasm that he exemplified. May we honor his legacy by fostering the same sense of connection and love that he brought into our lives.

In our hearts, Chuck will forever remain an irreplaceable presence. Let us find solace in the memories we shared and support one another as we navigate this journey of grief and healing. Together, we will carry his spirit forward, ensuring that his legacy lives on in our hearts and actions. It is truly an honor for having an opportunity to serve Chuck until his last days.

Chuck was a very special man, beloved not only by his own family, but his family here at Sandpiper, Palm Desert. He was our HOA President for many years and did a sterling job working not only with owners for their concerns, but contractors needed to resolve whatever issues occurred. He was very highly regarded and will certainly be missed by many.
