Irena Warno Obituary

IRENA WARNO, R. Ph. 1931 to 2005 Irena Warno passed away peacefully at home on May 16, 2005, surrounded by the love of her husband Henryk Warno, children, Basia Gliddon, Suzie Moore, Katie de Tilly, John Warno; and 9 grandchildren. She was born in Poland in 1931, daughter of Wilhelm and Boleslawa Engel; and sister to Witold, Tadeusz, Ryszard, and Viktoria Tyer. Her family survived WWII and was liberated by the American Army in Germany. She was a proud Girl Scout leader and led 400 Girl Scouts through the Alps. In 1952, her family emigrated to the U.S. settling in Albany, New York, where she studied at the College of St. Rose and graduated from Albany College of Pharmacy, 1959. Irena and Henryk moved to California in 1960. They owned Corner Drug Store and Warno Sports on Main St., Seal Beach since 1969. She was an enthusiastic member of the Board of Directors of t he Long Beach Grand Opera and actively participated in the Polish Community in Southern California. She was the rock upon which her family built its life. She is known for her vibrance, courage, optimism, colorful personality, excessive generosity, sharp wit, quick intelligence, and uncomprising will. The Rosary and Funeral will be together on Monday, May 23nd at 12:00 at St. Bartholomew's Church, 252 Granada Avenue, Long Beach, CA. 90803.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife and mother. I remember Irena working at Thrifty Drug Store in Bellflower when I was young. I stopped by the store in Seal Beach 5 or 6 years ago to say hello, she remembered my mom from Thrifty. I remember how sweet Irena was and the story of the Uninvited Christmas guests one year back then, and she was too nice to turn them away. My prayers are with you. Jo Ann
