After graduating high school in Michigan he joined the Coast Guard in 1944, receiving his training from Jack Dempsey in Ellis Island, NY. Aboard the navy ship USS Cavalier they landed troops in Saipan, Tinian; Layte, Luzon and Subic Bay until they were torpedoed in the South China Sea. As chief petty officer he discharged the crew in Long Beach. Falling in love with the city, he made his home here.
