Mary Elizabeth Burney Matreyek, 91, of Upland, died peacefully at home on December 27, 2010. She was born on December 6, 1919 in Micossukee, Florida to Thomas Richard Burney and Adelien Agnes Herold and lived in Tallahassee, Florida, Gainesville, Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, Denver Colorado, and Whittier and Newport Beach, California before settling in Upland with her husband Bill Matreyek in 1969. Mary was a graduate of Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida and received her BS in Home Economics in 1946 from the Florida State College for Women, today the Florida State University. Mary worked for AT&T and was a teacher in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to California where she became a Home Economics teacher at Montebello Junior High School. She married her husband of 40 years, Bill Matreyek in 1960. They started Matreyek Homes, a local home development company which built over 1000 homes, apartments, and condominiums in Upland, Ontario, Chino, Alta Loma, and Rancho Cucamonga. Mary was the owner of M&M Decors, which provided interior design services to buyers of homes built by Matreyek and to select private clients. Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Upland, a volunteer at San Antonio Community Hospital, a member of The American Association of University Women and a proud supporter of her alma mater, Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Mary also enjoyed tracing her family history and was the author of Rentsch-Herold Families in America, a personal history and geneology of her family published in 1986. Mary is survived by her son Tom Matreyek of Upland, her daughter Dee Matreyek-Kurth of Rancho Cucamonga, her step-son Mike Matreyek of Upland, and her step-daughter Pamela Parry of Spokane, Washington. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ruby Adeline Kurth and Daisy Grace Kurth of Rancho Cucamonga. Mary was preceeded in death by her husband Bill in 2000. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Upland, 869 N. Euclid Ave., Upland, CA at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 5, 2011. The family welcomes all who knew Mary to attend.
