Susan Scribner Obituary

Susan Mansfield Scribner passed away on January 10, 2021 at home in Long Beach, now pain free. Susan was born in Garden City, Long Island on July 18, 1951 to Kimball and Gloria Scribner. A fierce advocate and well respected consultant for the nonprofit sector, Susan spent her career working with over 500 regional and national nonprofits in the United States, Canada and Russia. A leading expert in all aspects of nonprofit financial and organizational development, she also lectured and taught at UCLA, University of Judaism, Cornell University, CSULB and captivated many at conferences and retreats. She authored several books, including Boards from Hell and How to Ask for Money Without Fainting, many of which were translated into a variety of languages. Her pride and joy were her family whom will miss her greatly, including her sister, Colleen Baliestrieri (Peter); niece, Kim Wilson (Geoff), their children Harrison, Reaves & Emilia; niece, Alissa Paris and son, Cooper; her dearest friend, Mary Richey and their dog, Leo. All who knew her will always remember her wild and wicked sense of humor, positive outlook and outrageous halloween costumes. She was a volunteer Sign Language interpreter, a licensed aircraft pilot and winner of the 1969 Transatlantic Air Race from New York to London. A Celebration of her Life will be planned when we can masklessly come together to honor this amazing woman, and share hysterical stories that highlight her sarcastic sense of humor. Donations in her honor would be greatly appreciated by The Nonprofit Partnership and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

Susan´s dad told me the story about the record setting flight from New York to London. I would like to get in touch with her sister or any of their children to ask about Kim´s stories. Bill McNease 817-691-1910 west coast time. Thanks

I just Googled Susan to see if we could collaborate on a project and was saddened to learn of her passing. She knew more about nonprofit management than I could learn in a thousand lifetimes. Her presence will be missed in our consulting community. Dr. Lois Frankel

Susi was one of my students at Garden City High School. She sang in the 185 voice Concert Choir. Susi gave up her lunch time to lead the Folkaires with her 12 string guitar. I remember clearly the day in 1969 that she said to me, "Tonight is the night I'm doing the race from the top of the Empire State Building to the top of the Daily Mail building in London!" Upon her return to class, her detailed description of this masterminded string of events included motorcycles, helicopters, plus hiding in the bathroom on the TWA trans-Atlantic flight. The determining factor that night was the calculation of the jet stream. This was just the beginning of a very eventful life filled with an effervescent sense of humor: the wilder the better. May she rest in peace free from pain.

Susi was one of my dearest high school friends. I could listen to her play her 12 string guitar and sing for hours. She certainly lived life to the fullest and anyone who knew her would never forget her. You will be missed dear Susi.

Susan was a Garden City High School classmate of mine. She could be found singing in the Folksong club and other choir groups at school. She was such a fun and lovely person. I was so sorry to hear of her passing ~
