David Alvarez Obituary

Our beloved husband, brother, nephew and friend David M. Alvarez passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in San Diego, California at the age of 70. He was born in Los Angeles, California to David C. and Natalia Alvarez.
David attended Las Cruces High School and New Mexico State University. He also proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1969 and worked for the City of Los Angeles then moving on to work for the City of Santa Monica.
It was in Santa Monica that lightning struck David when he was introduced to Elaine Koltunchik. David and Elaine were "that couple" we only read about. Truly a match made in heaven. They then moved to San Diego, where David was a Traffic Engineer until his retirement in 2002.
David's favorite thing to do was spend time with his best friend Elaine, whether it was out to dinner or in their backyard enjoying Elaine's beautiful garden. A close second was being with Elaine and her sister Joannie. They had many adventures together and were known as the Three Amigos. David enjoyed building model scale boats, and was a member of the San Diego Argonauts Scale Boat Division. He served as Vice Commodore for that organization and on Saturdays would be with the Club at the San Diego Bay sharpening their skills, sailing their scale boats or attending competitions.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 44 years, Elaine, sister Mary Helen Romero (Dick B.), and brother Javier Alvarez, sister-in-law Joannie Sumption and brother-in-law Thomas Koltunchik. He is also survived by nephews Dick A. Romero and Ryan Alvarez, niece Brittney Alvarez, and many uncles, aunts, cousins and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents David C. Alvarez and mother, Natalia M. Alvarez and his brother Raul Alvarez.
On David's birthday, September fifteenth, a celebration of his life will be held in San Diego, California.

Elaine, I'm so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I just now found out, two years later. I am now living in Connecticut, but I used to work with Dave when he first moved to California. We both worked for the City of Los Angeles at the time and used to commute together from Santa Monica. We became good friends during those years. One day he told me about this girl he met...couldn't stop talking about her. That girl was you, Elaine. You may not remember, but I was at your wedding (with my boyfriend who I ended up marrying eventually). It was so long ago but I just wanted to share a memory with you. Dave was a great guy and I was happy to read what a great marriage you had all these years. I hope you are doing well. God Bless You!

Elaine,
I just learned of Davids passing, and wanted to express how very sorry I am. I was a high school friend that went to Madonna High, and I'm pretty sure that because of the marvelous talent he had for dancing, he was at all of our dances and parties. The last time I saw him we were both in Richard and Beverley Lopez's wedding. He was a wonderful guy as you know. My prayers are with you
