Edward Gaughan Obituary

Edward D. Gaughan died suddenly March 6, 2009, due to acute Leukemia. He died at home surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Ed was born in Reading, Kansas, January 30, 1931, to Edward James Gaughan and Marie (Supple) Gaughan. He graduated from Emporia State Teachers College receiving Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Ed returned to school and completed a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Kansas and then served as a Professor of Mathematics at New Mexico State University from 1960 until his retirement in 1991. He was the author of numerous college level mathematics textbooks.
Ed married Lea Haag in 1953 before taking his position at NMSU. The two celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary this past February. They raised their eight children in Mesilla, New Mexico.
Family and friends fondly remember Ed's jovial sense of humor, finding joy in all people, life in general, and especially in his large family. Ed is survived by his wife Lea Gaughan, and children Eve Gaughan, David Gaughan, Jerald Gaughan, Michael Gaughan, Anne Perez, Sister Gabriel Mary (Jean Gaughan), Mary Ersinghaus, and Patrick Gaughan. Sons and daughters-in-law are Tami Gaughan, Ida Gaughan, Alfred Perez, Joe Ersinghaus, and Aleece Gaughan. The grandchildren are Batina Gaughan, Briann Gaughan, Logan Gaughan, Henry Gaughan, Joshua Perez and wife Emily Perez, Jessica Perez, Ariel Perez, Mary Grace Perez, Daniel Perez, Anne Ersinghaus, Erin Ersinghaus, Paul Gaughan, Amelia Gaughan, Claire Gaughan, Susan Gaughan, and great-grandchild Olivia Perez. He is also survived by his sister Mary Wellnitz and her family.
A memorial service will take place Wednesday March 11, 2009 at 2 PM at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. The rite of committal will take place at another date in Kansas.
In honor of Ed's desire for the education of our youth, a scholarship fund has been established. Fund contributions can be made to the Edward D. Gaughan Memorial Scholarship Fund at First American Bank, 1553 Avenida de Mesilla, P.O. Box 2380, Las Cruces, NM 88004.

Dear Lea and Family,
I was truly saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I remember him enjoying life and pulling off practical jokes (like tying the screen door to the inside door on both front and rear porches so I had to climb out a window to untie them in order to get to work). I will miss him and keep you and kids in my thoughts.

Dearest Gaughan Family,

We were very sad to hear of Mr. Gaughan's passing. Our hearts go out to you along with many prayers during this time. He was such a great man. Always a joy to talk to! I remember the great jeep rides he used to take the neighborhood kids on when we were all little and that bell he used to round up all the kids back home. Many fond memories! He will be missed. Gods blessings to you all.

To the lovely Gaughan family,
You are all a tribute to the fine man your husband, father, and grand-father was. I am saddened by his passing and thinking what a loss you all must feel. Our loss, however, is Heaven's gain, and I will think of Ed basking in the presence of our Lord- reunited with the loved ones who preceded him in his passing.
May our Lord's grace surround you and comfort you in your grief.
