Erick Ness Obituary

Erik Leroy Ness, 57, a long time native New Mexico newsman, passed away on May 12. He was born and raised in Alamogordo, New Mexico during the height of the Space Race. Both parents, Carl and Marie Ness were involved in that endeavor. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1972, learning from teachers who inspired him to be a writer. His memory of seeing the Wonderful World of Disney in color on television also sparked an acute interest in radio and television broadcasting. He attended the University of New Mexico until his brains grew in, and he was lured by the smell of alfalfa and a really good journalism department to New Mexico State University. At NMSU he was part of their legendary film program under the direction of Dr. Orville Wanzer, and produced a long series of black and white and color films. While attending NMSU he worked as operations manager for radio station KGRT and was one of the founders of campus radio station, KNMS, "Ozone Ranger Radio". He also served as a news stringer for Albuquerque news stations, KOB, KOAT, and KGGM and was a southern New Mexico correspondent for 50,000 watt KKOB radio. Outside of journalism Erik worked on over 100 political campaigns including the position of press secretary for Attorney General of New Mexico. After graduating from NMSU he worked as news director for KDQQ and KKOB radio as news reporter and anchorman. In 1981 he was went to work for New Mexico Farm Bureau as their director of communications and media relations, where he was twice recognized as the nation's most effective agriculture public relations spokesman as well as the recipient of numerous national awards for broadcast commentary, broadcast features, and broadcast news productions. In addition, he received many awards for his print writing skills and unusual "wordsmithing". He also worked for the American Farm Bureau Federation as a national broadcast commentator on the groundbreaking radio show "Insight!". Many of Erik's commentaries were used by Paul Harvey on his ABC broadcast. He served as president of New Mexico Press Club and the Advertising Federation of Southern New Mexico. He also served as a board member of Cowboys for Cancer Research. He retired from the New Mexico Farm Bureau in 2010 after but continued to write columns for the National Farm Bureau in addition to media consulting for the Elephant Butte Irrigation District. Erik was an award winning song writer and music producer and recording artist. He worked with many of the nation's leading songwriters and bands in the southwest and Nashville. He's the winner of the American Collegiate Talent Search (ACTS) which was judged by singer/songwriter Michael Martin Murphy. At that time he and Murphy became close friends, collaborators, conspirators, calculators in the world of cowboy and country music. He was able to travel with Murphy all over the country and experience all sides of music and show business world. Erik and Murph just finished their latest song together, "Law and Order on the Border". Most of Erik's recording was done at the legendary studio, Goldust, in Las Cruces, New Mexico under the tutelage of recording engineer and producer, Emmett Brooks. Erik was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Marie Ness of Alamogordo. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sharon Sumner; sons, Erik and Garrett of the family home; daughter, Emily Gaffney, husband, Thomas and grandson, Conner of Albuquerque; sisters, Caryl Ann Gutheinz and husband, Lee of Albuquerque, Linda Gulley and husband, Jim of Alamogordo. Friends are invited to a celebration of Erik's life to be held May 18 at 1:30 at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum. Sign the guest book www.lapaz-grahams.com

I wish I had been a better friend so I wouldn't have to write this last minute verse....the world won't be the same, you were all heart and what is a world without heart.....love and miss you always, old friend!!

Couldn't make it to the funeral, but I will always remember Erick and the adventures we shared and talked about, as well as the political fights we got into.

Saddened to hear the news. Erik took me under his wing (which as anyone who knew him was not the normal shelter) when I was a young broadcast director at Wisconsin Farm Bureau. Talented, fun and a genuine character.

I heard about Erik years before I met him. I just knew no man could live up to his legendary tales. Then I met him and realized how wrong I had been. He really was a legend in every way.

My heart goes out to all who were blessed enough to have shared even a moment of Erik's life. My life was made richer and full of more laughter when I encountered Erik when I tagged along with Mace. I am thankful to you, Erik's family for sharing him with the AFBF family. Denise Thornton

When I think of New Mexico I always think of Erik Ness, a friend and colleague through Farm Bureau. Erik had a great understanding of western agriculture and was super-talented. He saw things others didn't which helped make him an outstanding writer and broadcaster. God Bless, buddy.

Virginia and I were sad to learn of the death of Erik. He was so very smart, talented, and funny. While we find both spoken and written words inadequate to express the depth of our concern for Sharon and all of Erik's family, we do want you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers, now and forever.

My relationship with Erik goes back over 30 years as a writer, musician and song writer. My years with AFBF are filled with "Ness-isms" including a overcrowded tourist boat hired by Erik that nearly sank before we ever got away from the pier. As Writer he was superb. As a song writer his often quirky humor, mixed with story telling excellence made his music attention getting and a desire for repetitive listening. I still play his songs on my radio show, and have arranged a few for my band to perform. Erik will be missed..but his words and songs will will keep his memory alive !

Please allow me to offer my heartfelt condolences to the entire Ness family. While I did not know Mr. Ness personally, it was my pleasure to teach his son Eric this school year. Rare is the student who can hold up through such a time of sadness as Eric has. Daily, he honored his father by giving his best in class despite sleepless nights and a great heaviness of heart. Eric, please know that you and your family continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. You're a good boy, son.

It was a privilege knowing Erik through our national Farm Bureau family of communicators. I had the good fortune to see and applaud him and his work during our national awards celebrations – he was a truly talented person. Erik was also all-in with every endeavor he undertook…passionate, persistent, and enduring at work or at play. His sense of humor was unique – the last voice mail I got from Erik he posed as a mule driver who wanted to house his overstock mules in the back lot of our office building until he could find a buyer for them. Of course, he eventually got around to business by asking the question for which he'd called. I think I most admired Erik for his “Columbo-type” persona – unassuming, relating on the level of the common person – yet wise as a fox with the ability to dig deep and expose the heart of the people and stories he covered. Erik will be missed – but I assure you his presence will survive, may we all hold close and emulate those endearing qualities of Erick Ness. Peace be with you and your family.

I'll miss my good friend. I would could write a book with all the good and humerous times with Erik. Keep a place for me by the fire pit and pour me some of that cheap wine from the box in a plastic cup. I'll be along.

The world of Ag Journalism and New Mexico Agriculture lost a great talent and a passionate supporter. And he was a really nice guy too!! RIP Erik. You made your years count!!

What a great friend. I will miss him as much as will have missed anyone! We had great adventures together. He opened the musical door for me and made it possible for me to open for Michael Martin Murphey on a couple of occasions. Our joke was Erik was my Uncle Tom Parker.
Sharon: you had a heck of a guy!
Garrett and Erik: your Dad was proud of you.
Rest in Peace Erik Leroy Ness. My heart is heavy.

Erik was a wonderful person who I had the opportunity to know in the capacity as a fellow broadcaster. Thank you for your contribution to a community that you loved. My thoughts are with the family left behind.

I met Erik when I worked as news reporter for KVIA TV covering southern New Mexico for many years. He was a staunch supporter of farmers and ranchers and worked tirelessly to get their message across. I also did freelance video work for the Farm Bureau. I remember his terrific sarcastic humor and what a practical joker he was too! I am stunned and saddened by his passing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
