Janie Hoshijo Obituary

Janie Livingston Hoshijo (Adams) was born on May 24th, 1945 in Wichita Falls, TX to Isaac and Stella Adams. She passed away peacefully amongst loved ones on April 6th 2018 in Las Cruces, NM.
Janie grew up in west Texas and moved to California as a teen where she attended Taft High School. In her 20's, on a whim, she moved to Hawaii with one of her close girlfriends. In Hawaii she fell in love with a local boy, got married, and had two beautiful daughters from this union. Janie raised her daughters in Hawaii until they moved to Greeley, Colorado in 1989 so she could pursue her college degree. She went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado where she was an academic scholar.
Janie loved her daughters and grandkids beyond words. She shared with many that the birth of her children was her saving grace. Janie instilled in daughters her memorable spirt, warmth, and resilience. She was unbelievably dedicated to her children and supported them in all their childhood and adult endeavors. Janie's love for her grandchildren was the air she needed in the latter part of her life. They brought her great joy and laughter that energized her soul. As a Mom and Nana she reveled in the silliness of playing cops and robbers, tea party with British accents, or dressing up with them for Halloween. Janie loved dancing around the house with her daughters to the GREASE soundtrack and later with her grandkids to one of her favorite groups, Earth, Wind, and Fire. Some of her fondest memories as a Mom were spent on the beaches of Maui with her children. She loved sunsets and would often rush her kids to Cove beach in Kihei to watch the sun set. A working class mom, Janie was never afraid of hard work. Her daughters often joked that she was a born hustler as she always found ways to provide for her family.
Janie was passionate about issues related to social injustice, domestic violence, and immigrant rights. She was a well-read woman who wasn't afraid of making her politics known. A beautiful woman in her own right, she was a woman's woman who never hesitated giving a fellow female a compliment or helping hand. She valued her friendships-period. Janie made a point to make people feel welcomed, included, and special… so long as they weren't Republicans. Janie never met a cat or a dancefloor she didn't love. Her cats provided her great comfort and in return, she provided them a loving home. She enjoyed following the lives of Princess Diana, Oprah, Dr. Oz, the Kennedys, President Obama, and Tiger Woods. If you asked her, it wasn't true unless Oprah or Dr. Oz said so. Above all, Janie lived life. She laughed much, loved many, and affected all who crossed her path.
A beloved Mom, Nana, Auntie and friend, Janie leaves behind her daughters Miya and Nori, her niece Treva, nephews Colby and Tyler, and her grandchildren Koa, Takeo, Kea, and Kenna. Janie also leaves behind her "calabash" family in Moses, Jacob, Raelyn, Ronnie, Nolan, and Nate. We will miss hearing you laugh until you snort, you saying "I hawked my jewelry", your feisty opinions, and all the pairs of dollar store reading glasses you misplaced. Most of all, we will miss your loving heart. We promise to honor you through the good we do for ourselves and others.
Janie felt her happiest in Hawaii where she lived for over 20 years. True to her unorthodox spirit, we will celebrate her life in Hawaii as we scatter her ashes over her beloved Maui. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Janie's memory to Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary in Las Cruces, NM.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM! WE MISS YOU.

My beloved Janie, you will be truly missed. I will never forget the silly times we had together camping with Uncle Charlie in Hana, on Makena Beach, and our hilarious weekend with the girls in Las Vegas. I will miss our long phone conversations and your funny way you snorted when you laugh. Until we meet again, I will never forget a special friend ❤❤❤My heart is broken
