Jeanette Harben Obituary

After a brave and determined battle with cancer, Jeanette Harris Harben died at Memorial Medical Center on Saturday May 10. She was 59.

Jeanette was born on August 4, 1948, during the British Blockade of Berlin to William and Gerda Harris. The family settled in Toronto, Canada, in 1951 where Jeanette excelled in academia. She graduated from Don Mills Junior High with the highest academic standing and then the Don Mills Collegiate Institute where she was an Ontario Scholar.
She went on to earn a BA in English Language and Literature in 1971 and an MA in English in 1972 at Victoria College, University of Toronto. While an undergraduate, she won the R.H M. Jolliffe Gold Medal in English Language and Literature with her best friend Anne Skabarnicki and was the Woodrow Wilson Finalist.

Her pursuit of education led Jeanette across the pond from 1975 to 1979 where she undertook graduate research at King's College, University of London. Along with her academic achievements, Jeanette also excelled in the world of writing; she wrote Canada: The Land and Its People for Macdonald Educational, was a writer in the editorial department of Camera Press writing and researching features and captions with an international flavor, and wrote for BBC Modern English.

While in graduate school and President of Lillian Penson Hall, she met husband Peter Harben while he was at the Royal School of Mines in London. In 1979 they set up the Manhattan office of Industrial Minerals journal and lived in Westchester County where their two children, Mark and Victoria, were born.

Shortly after, they discovered the beautiful Butternut Valley in upstate New York, where they raised their children in The Grove, an 1833 Greek revival house in the village of Morris. During that time she wrote Mountain Magic and Mined It! A Fairy Tale with Mineral Content for her own company, Butternut Books. She served as president of the Butternut Valley Arts and Crafts Center for several years.
She and her family soon followed the sun and her growing love for the southwest and moved to Las Cruces permanently in 2000. Jeanette was a realtor with Century 21 All Stars for five years and was the top producer in 2005. She was president of the Women's Council of Realtors and briefly acted as PR Chairman for the Board of Realtors.
All that knew her will miss her radiant smile, vibrant style, and boundless generosity. She is survived by husband Peter Harben, children Mark and Victoria, and Aunts Annemarie Birch of Toronto and Renata Adams of Newport, RI. A private family funeral will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Las Cruces.

Jeanette requested in lieu of flowers donations be made to Jardín de los Niños, 999 West Amador Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88005 ([email protected]).

The Harben Family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road to direct Funeral Service. 527-2222

Estimado Peter y Familia
Siento mucho que Jeanette se nos ha ido. Era una persona my hermosa. Cuando ella andaba por rumbo de mi casa, llegaba y me dejaba pan dulce en una bolsita colgando de mi puerta. Que el recuerdo de ella los apoye y les de fuerza para seguir adelante.

Dear Peter and Family,
I am so sorry that Jeanette has left us. She was a lovely person. Whenever she passed by my house she would stop and leave me a bag of sweet bread hanging from my door. May your memory of her give you support and strength in the days to come.

I am so sorry to read tonight of Jeanette's difficult bout with cancer and her death. It was a joy being neighbors in Morris and I am grateful I have her "Morris" books. It will take courage for the long uphill climb back to sanity, faith and security. May you help each other. I write in saddness and sympathy, Alice

Dear Peter, Mark, and Victoria,
We are very saddened by the loss of Jeanette. To us she was a dear friend. To you, Pete, she was your soul mate. For you Victoria and Mark, she was the source of continual guidance, support, and unconditional love. On many occasions when she spoke of you she did so with joy, pride, and recognition of each of your unique gifts.
While we all mourn her loss, allow us to look upon her life as a blessing. I, Maria, will remember Jeanette for her thoughtfulness toward others. On the many occasions when we shopped together I saw Jeanette buy not for herself, but for others, with the thought of someone’s birthday or anniversary in mind. Also, although well educated and well read she was most gracious when she made my mother, a person with an 8th grade education and limited English, feel comfortable and welcome with her engaging conversation and gift of sweet bread. Given her academic and professional accomplishments, she was modest…. never did she boast.
Jeanette was the consummate professional realtor, which former clients, including ourselves, can attest to. On one occasion I, Manny, requested her services to list and sell a small home to which she was as attentive and energetic as if it were a high priced home. Her generosity went beyond the call of duty and sale of the property (i.e., watering plants and picking up packages for ex-clients!).
It has been said that the greatest gift one can give another is love. Jeannette’s life exemplified love toward you and all who knew her. The German philosopher, Gottfried Von Leibniz said, “To love is to place our happiness in the happiness of another”. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories of love Jeanette bestowed upon you.

Love,
Manny and Maria Lopez

Dear Peter, Mark and Victoria,

Jeanette always believed the best of me and would look for ways to stimulate me to write. She put some great literature into my hands as well. She did that with all of us, I think. She had a way of discovering, and taking an interest in, those things that are dear to us, encouraging and facilitating whenever she could. I picture her with a watering can, carefully sprinkling the little flowers, the people in her life. Our thoughts are with you during this grievous time.

Sincerely,

Roger

Peter, Mark and Victoria,

In gratitude we remember the friendship we shared during your years here in the Butternut Valley, Jeanette’s delight in life at her lovely home in The Grove, and her great-hearted kindness. Her gift of true hospitality, welcoming others into her home and into her heart, provided a still point in this turning world.

Jeanette's suffering during the past year has weighed heavily on our hearts because of our love for her and for all of you. Even in the fearful face of death itself, Jeanette graciously held you all in her love as you struggled together throughout this terrible ordeal.

Even in our suffering the death of someone we love with a love inseparable from life itself, we hold fast to that love, so that love---not fear---has the final word in our lives. If our life beyond this one brings us into the fellowship which our hearts have long sought, Jeanette will be most welcomed into that good fellowship.
