Kevin McLaughlin Obituary

Kevin Patrick McLaughlin, 28, of Washington, DC, died unexpectedly after a brief illness on March 12, 2014. He was the much beloved son of Drs. Timothy McLaughlin and Marian Kellner of Farmington, CT and adored by his sister Caitlin McLaughlin Lischick of New York, NY. Born on February 17, 1986, Kevin attended Renbrook School for nine years and graduated from Avon Old Farms School. He earned a B.A. in Sociology from George Washington University; a significant accomplishment after recovering from severe burns sustained during a fire in his dorm room freshman year. Kevin loved the city of Washington, DC, where he lived from 2004 to the present, his work as Human Resources Coordinator at AdvaMed, music, dogs, jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with his family on Block Island every summer. His unflagging optimism, ready wit, kindness, and generosity of spirit made Kevin a treasured friend to many. Besides his parents and sister, Kevin is survived by his grandfather, Frank McLaughlin of Savannah, GA, his brother-in-law, Matthew Lischick of New York, NY, and his girlfriend, Gabriella Iannetta of Glen Cove, NY, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Anne and Erwin Kellner and Rita McLaughlin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Patrick in Farmington, CT on Tuesday, March 18 at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation: www.dcffburnfoundation.org.

Thought of you on your birthday today, and memories of our shared birthday parties in Connecticut during lower and middle school. It felt so special to have a best friend whose birthday was just a day apart from mine. Our friendship, the adventures we had in the woods, on skateboards and at school, was such a cherished part of my childhood. Thinking of you and your loved ones on this day. Happy birthday.

Hey Kevin, while we both went to Renbrook, I got to know you as a freshman at The George Washington University. You were so kind to me when I was the new guy. You had a large group of friends, but you made me feel welcomed during parties and social gatherings by taking me under your wing and introducing me to others. While we lost touch since then, I always appreciated that--as well as the laughs and good times we shared. I hope you are in a good place now, and you are free of pain. God bless you, you will always be in our hearts.

Dear Marian, Tim and Caitlin,

We have just heard of your unbearable loss. Just recently we were remembering all the wonderful times we shared with Kevin during the Renbrook years; skiing, sleepovers, sports and childhood shenanigans. He was a regular member of our household as Alex was in yours. They had a strong connection. We recall fondly, his youthful wit, great sense of humor, refined courtesy and consideration and truly adorable personality. Our thoughts go out to you all. He will be forever remembered.

Marian,
I am so sorry to hear of your devastating loss. My prayers go out to you. I didn't know you were in Connecticut and had a family. (The last time I saw you was about 40 years ago in a china shop in Bethesda.) We have been in Connecticut since 1976.
I have lost track of so many cousins. It would be good to reconnect.

So sorry for your loss. Kevin was a great guy and a pleasure to work with. He would send the emails announcing whether we had a casual Friday, and we had a great running gag where I would pester him for an early heads up. He was always very coy about it. He will be missed...

How deeply saddened we are to hear of Kevin's passing. As a colleague and long time friend of Kevin's father we watches Kevin grow, heard of his triumphs and his successes and his overwhelming tenacity to overcome life's struggles. Kevin's passing came as a great shock and I am deeply saddened by his loss. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to you. His voice, delightful attitude, and wonderfully funny humor will be sorely missed.

I heard from him via phone or email almost daily (and sometimes more than once - for which he always apologized in his well-mannered, thoughtful way - often with a joke thrown in for good measure) through my work at AdvaMed's broker's office. While I only actually met him twice, his instant warmth and friendliness was a credit to him.

I'm so glad to have had the pleasure of knowing and working with such a charming young man. Thank you.
