Lafe Gottschling Obituary

Lafe Benson Gottschling, 51, was called to our Lord on Dec. 10, 2015, surrounded by family, loved ones and close colleagues at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Born May 20, 1964, in Kingsville Texas to Herb Gottschling Jr. and his late mother, Karen Gottschling. A graduate of Mayfield High School class of 1982, Lafe went on to have a highly successful media career working in both television and radio as a sales consultant for several stations in El Paso, including KVIA Channel 7, Clear Channel Communications, Entravision Communications and his true home, Bravo Mic Communications in Las Cruces, just to name a few. Always involved with various businesses around town, Lafe was also a well distinguished member of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce Conquistadores, attending several events that benefited the business community.
A huge fan of science fiction, especially "Stargate" and a well-rounded karaoke connoisseur, he was easily the life of any social gathering and his people skills had no equal. He enjoyed giving to others, spending many Thanksgiving holidays feeding the homeless and less fortunate as well as getting in a game of golf whenever he could. He also enjoyed many things while staying home, including activities such as playing badminton in his backyard and of course, while having friends over or even by himself, he could be heard singing at the top of his lungs for all his neighbors (including his father who lives next door) to hear. At the end of the day, what he cherished most was spending quality time with his girlfriend, Jade, and her daughter Michelle.
He is survived by his father, Herb Gottschling Jr., and sister, Kathy (Ken) Stevens; significant other, Jade Mendoza; nephew, Justin Dooley; along with nieces, Jena (Chris) Minkler and Jaimie (Manny) Calderon; cousins, Dianne (Michael) Gomez, Kay Lynn Phillips, Jeff Flower, Karen Lynn Flower; aunt, Evelyn Flower and uncle Kenneth, (Angela) Kennerly and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Gottschling; grandparents, Herb and Otilla Gottschling; and Kenneth and Gladys Kennerly.
In presence there is healing. Let us gather not to mourn, but to celebrate and remember the life of an extraordinary man who touched so many lives and will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015, at Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E. Bowman Ave.

Lafe,
From the first time we were doing king of the hill in 5th grade to all the times you Guy , Nolan and myself went on adventures. We always crossed paths and picked up where we left off. You lived life big and I am thank full for all the all the shared memories. You were too young to be taken from us. Prayers for the family in dealing with this loss. Take care.

I'm deeply sorry for the loss of your loved one. May loving words comfort your family at this time of sorrow. (Isaiah 57:15)

I remember Lafe as far back as grade school in Las Cruces. He was always a happy, rambunctious kid with a big smile and twinkly eyes. While we didn't stay in touch as the years went by, his sister Kathy and I have been in touch the last few years and renewed our friendship and memories. My heart aches for his family and his huge circle of friends and colleagues who will miss loving and generous personality. I share in your loss of not only the fine man he grew into, but of the full of life child that I know many of us remember. My prayers and hope for healing surround you all.
