Ramona Chavez Obituary

Ramona E. Chavez, 71 of Las Cruces entered the Kingdom of God peacefully surrounded by her children on September 11, 2017.

Ramona was born in Alamogordo to Guadalupe Gallegos on October 26, 1945. She attended Alamogordo High School where she meet the love of her life Ricky Chavez at the age of 15 and they were married on August 8, 1964 at Immaculate Conception Church. Ramona was a devoted mother raising her four children which was a full-time job. Mona enjoyed teaching Religious Education for over 30 years, was a Eucharistic Minister and Fiesta Volunteer at her parish. Throughout her life, community involvement was very important to her as she taught Community Education, home economics classes and was involved in TOPS and Cub Scouts just to name a few. One of the highlights of her service-based career was receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award for Volunteerism for women of Alamogordo.

Ramona is preceded in death by her mother Guadalupe Gallegos, her sister Ruthie and her husband Reynaldo Chavez Sr. Sisters-in-law Mary, Katie, Chapa and brothers-in-law Jimmy, Frank, Sonny and Lee.

She is survived by her four children; Reynaldo Chavez Jr., Phillip Chavez, Matthew Chavez and wife Sheila, Monci and husband Jimmy Hoadrea. Her brother Johnny Gallegos and wife Petra. Grandchildren Marina Chavez, Xavier Morales, Joseph Canales, Jimmy Rey Hoadrea. Great Grandchildren Bradley and Carol Chavez. Sisters-in-law Lorenza Gonzalez, Virginia Estrada, Juanita Maynes, Patsy Padilla, Lupe Maynez, and Corrine Chavez. Brothers-in-law Pete Estrada, and Oscar Maynez. Great uncle Leonardo Gallegos as well and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and God-children.

Ramona was an avid reader, loved watching television game shows and touched many young people's lives with her words of wisdom. The entire neighborhood relied on her generosity be it driving kids to and from soccer and band practice, or to Mass and religious education classes. All of the neighborhood kids knew where they could find the best home-made tortillas in town as she always had them at the ready with plenty of butter. After all of her children were of school-age and on their own during the day, Mona started up a cleaning business which she maintained throughout her adult life.
