George Shultz Obituary

Rev. George Shultz, Jr. SPRING TWP. Reverend George Shultz, Jr., 86, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at 6:31 p.m. in the Reading Hospital, where he was admitted earlier in the day. He was the husband of Mary Jane (Huber) Shultz, who died July 27, 2008. They were married for 58 years. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late George Shultz, Sr. and Mary Emma (Vollrath) Shultz. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. He attended Lancaster City Schools, graduating from McCaskey High School. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he attended and graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1950. In 1953, he graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary. While studying at the seminary, he served the two church charge at Reich's Church and East Petersburg in the Evangelical Christian Church. After serving these congregations for five years, he responded to a call to serve Christ Evangelical & Reformed Church in Alexandria, Pa. He served this church until 1958 when he received a call to what is now Faith U.C.C. outside of Littlestown. While serving as the Pastor at Faith Church, he was also the Director of Camping and Conferences for the Mercersburg and Potomac Synods. The territory for which he was responsible went as far south as Roanoke, Va., and into north central Pennsylvania. In February of 1964, he accepted the call to serve St. Mark's U.C.C., Lebanon. Rev. Shultz served St. Mark's for 29 years, retiring in February of 1993. During his tenure at St. Mark's, he helped lead the congregation through two major building projects. One was the building of the current Christian Education Building, which continues to serve both the church and the community as a whole. The second project was the remodeling of the sanctuary. After his retirement from full time ministry, he served as interim pastor to several congregations: St. Luke's U.C.C., Lititz; Myerstown U.C.C., Myerstown; First U.C.C., Hamburg; and St. John's (Gibraltar) U.C.C., Gibraltar. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Phillies, gardening, and church. His family gave him great joy. He is survived by three sons, Kenneth D., husband of Dawn M. Shultz of Lebanon, James C. Shultz of Reinholds, and David M., husband of Brenda L. Shultz of Lebanon; a daughter, Barbara J., wife of Robert P. Eberly of Shillington; four grandchildren, Tyler E. Shultz, Andriana L. (Shultz), wife of Matthew Daly, Philip J., husband of Erin Eberly, and Megan L. (Eberly), wife of Michael Bingham; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Eberly. He was predeceased by his sister, Christine Shultz in 1933. A service of Celebration and Remembrance will be held in Immanuel United Church of Christ on Friday evening, August 16, 2013, at 6 p.m. the Rev. Megan Huesgen and the Rev. Dale Davis will officiate. Interment will be private in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Lancaster. The Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. is assisting the Shultz family. Please honor Rev. Dave and Brenda,

Our family is so sorry for your loss. Your father was a wonderful man and a fine preacher. I was very fortunate to be the Choir director for one year at St. Mark's before coming to the Harrisburg area and it was certainly a delight to work with him.

Take care and God bless you!

Dad Shultz will be sorely missed. His wisdom, encouragement and caring are just a few of his attributes that made him special. His love for our Lord and Savior was so evident in his daily talk and walk. God bless you and our family.
