He was a loving husband and father. He was an enthusiastic dirt track racing fan, frequenting tracks across Pennsylvania and New York, and loved to watch NASCAR racing as well. He also loved to spend time in his garden, watching birds, and manicuring his lawn. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and enjoyed working with people.

In addition his wife, survivors include his children, Frank Shaffer of Brookville, Robert Shaffer and his wife, Jodee, of Reedsville, and Michele Shaffer and partner, Matthew Gross, of Vashon, Wash.; two sisters, Arletta Demko of Punxsutawney, and Donna Hoffman and her husband, Donald, of Florida; an aunt, Tib Snyder of Timblin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
