Mary K. Gilbertson, 72, of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2024, at her home with her family by her side.
She was born, March 12, 1952, in Merrill, WI, the daughter of Robert and Janet (Mathison) Savaske. Mary grew up in Merrill and graduated from high school in 1970 and married David Pophal. They moved to Eau Claire in 1972 and had two children, DJ & Suzanne.
Mary worked in banking for over 20 years at Community State Bank. In 1998 she purchased Cleaners & Tailors in Eau Claire and renamed it Gilbertson's Cleaners and worked there together with her two children. Mary cared deeply for her customers, always going above and beyond to meet their needs. She became close friends with many of them. Mary retired in 2023.
Among Mary's hobbies were fishing, playing cribbage, and reading murder mysteries. Above all she loved spending time with her family and her four grandchildren. Mary had an infectious laugh and the gift of gab. She will always be remembered as an easygoing, kind and caring person. Mary will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne (Jeremy) Crowell of Eau Claire; daughter-in-law, Kelly Pophal of Durand, WI; four grandchildren, Ashton & Cameron Crowell, and Emily & Kailyn Pophal; siblings, Kandy Gattuso, Pat (Wendy) Savaske, Amy (Kent) Laabs, and Danny "Boone" Savaske; and by many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her son, DJ Pophal; her parents; and siblings, Bob Savaske, and Peggy Jameson.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, November 11 at Chippewa Valley Cremation Services - Celebration of Life Center in Altoona.
