Edith C. Balazik, 95, of Hummelstown, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, at the Columbia Cottage in Palmyra.
She was born on April 27, 1923, in Cadogan, and was the daughter of the late Edith and John Hellgren. She was the last survivor of nine brothers and sisters.
Edith married Joseph Balazik, of Ford City, in 1943. During World War II she was with her husband while he was in flight training. Edith went to visit the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus. Dad was flying overhead when he saw the circus tent erupt in flames and was in great fear for her life and could not do anything about it. Luckily, the pregnant Edith felt sick and left the tent right before the fire. She traveled with him and during the Korean War, they were stationed at Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan, supporting air actions in Korea. Later they were stationed in North Carolina, Virginia, New York, and Texas. During the Vietnam War, they were stationed in Bangkok, where Joseph was the Air Force Logistics Advisor in the Military Assistance Group to the Royal Thailand Air Force. As a retired officer, he worked with Northrop as a logistics advisor to the Saudi Arabian Air Force. Edith really did not like the sand and heat over there but did enjoy the R&R trips to Greece.
She is survived by son, (LTC Ret.) Joseph C. Balazik, Jr., of Riverview, Fla.; daughter, E. Christina Filson, of Clarksburg, Md.; and grandson, Jonathan D. Filson, in Maryland.
