Joseph A. Atwood, Sr., 77, of Kittanning, passed peacefully at home on February 12, 2022 after a long battle with cancer.
Joe was born on May 28, 1944 in Kittanning to Frank and Anna Rea Atwood, the sixth of 10 children. He was a lifelong resident of the Kittanning Area having spent his career working at the H.M Pollock Company and then the Armstrong School District.
Joe married the love of his life, Judy (Cogley) Atwood on April 27, 1968 in Winchester, VA. They spent the next 53 years together raising 6 children, before having 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. During those years, Joe was a member of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Kittanning. He was also a life member of the Kittanning Elks.
Joe loved most sports. He was a member of the 1960 Kittanning Varsity Basketball state championship team. He was also an avid bowler for many years and was invited to bowl on one of the Pittsburgh television stations. As his grandchildren grew, his love of sports continued but now as a coach and their biggest fan. He was found at his children and grandchildren's events from concerts to football games to tennis and wrestling matches. He loved spending time with his family and he and Judy spent many nights laughing and playing cards with James (Skeets) and Helen Cogley.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Judy, of Kittanning, and children, Marci Atwood, Theresa McMaster (Chance Jones) and Joseph Atwood, Jr., all of Kittanning, Dr. Daniel Atwood, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kirk (Jessica) Atwood, of Erie and J. Charlie (Jenny) Atwood, of Kittanning. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kyle (Stephanie) Atherton, Jesse (Gayle) McMaster, Jacob (Amber) McMaster, Lauren (Mark) Montgomery, Jaret Atwood, Oggie Atwood, Toby Atwood, Cyrus Atwood and Ava Atwood. He is also survived by his 8 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Jack (Judy) Atwood, of Indianapolis, Indiana, Don (Luann Croyle) Atwood, of Kittanning, Carol (Dan) Stanley, of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Greg (Joyce) Atwood, of Mansfield, Ohio as well as his sisters-in-law, Zelma Atwood, of Streetsboro, Ohio and Nancy Davis, of Sugarcreek Township, and his brothersin law, Jim (Sharon) Cogley and Chuck (Penny) Cogley, of Kittanning.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-inlaw, Fred and Mary Cogley; brothers, Frankie, William, Larry "Chaz," Robert and R. Michael Atwood; and his stepdaughter, Laurie Sue.
Joe will be fondly remembered for always having a smile to share and not going anywhere without running in to someone he knew. Mostly, he will be remembered as the best husband, father and grandfather a family could have ever known.
Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, in the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, 200 S. McKean St., Kitttanning.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022, in St Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Kittanning, with the Rev. Ronald Maquinana officiating.
