BRUCE CARTWRIGHT Obituary
BRUCE CARTWRIGHT
02/19/1934 - 10/08/2025
Bruce Cartwright, 91, of Leavenworth died Wednesday, October 8, 2025. He was born February 19, 1934, the son of James and Virginia (Heinie) Cartwright.
Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Bruce's parents believed in a life of public service. His mother worked in the county court system and his father was a gold shield detective for the City of Los Angeles. Upon graduation from Belmont High School, Bruce enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served our country for 22 years with pride and devotion achieving a rank of Lt. Colonel. His last post was Fort Leavenworth where he was the acting Adjutant General. Before retiring he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Park College. Following retirement, Bruce continued a professional career of public service working at the U.S. Penitentiary and Leavenworth County Probation office.
Bruce's greatest love was his wife of 70 years, Margaret. They met on a blind date while he was stationed at Fort Ord and she was a senior at San Jose State. Margaret had to buy the beer as Bruce was not yet 21! Margaret was the quintessential military wife and together they partnered through five deployments and multiple domestic and overseas stations. They had two children, countless dogs, and traveled the world.
He married Margaret (Calgher) Cartwright in Taft, Calif., on June 25, 1955. She survives him. He is also survived by daughter, Kimberley Hess and her husband, Michael of Pittsboro, N.C.; son, Mark Cartwright and his wife Mary of Charleston, S.C.; sister-in-law, Sandra Calgher; and nieces and nephews, Christopher, Courtney and Katrina.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Paul Calgher.
He enjoyed and excelled at a number of hobbies and activities during his lifetime. In his younger years Bruce was an avid golfer, frequently playing with his wife and son. He was also a member of Fort Leavenworth Hunt Club and showed horses with his daughter. Bruce and his long time pairs partner, Frank Wilson, were Kansas State skeet champions in all four shotgun gauges. A gentleman farmer, Bruce enjoyed all aspects of working the land. He mostly enjoyed his many canine companions throughout the years and will be missed by his Australian Shepherd, Bandit.
The family would like to thank the countless friends who have helped and supported Bruce and Margaret throughout the years and especially in the last several months.
Remembrances may be made to an animal rescue or veteran organization of your choice. A celebration of life is planned for a later date.
