Arthur Eugene Tyson January 20, 1937 - February 21, 2004 COLUMBUS, GA - Mr. Arthur Eugene Tyson, 67, of 5729 Winvelly Drive, Columbus, died Saturday, Feb. 21, at his residence. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Greater St. Mark A.M.E. Church, 546 2nd Avenue in Columbus, with the Rev. Wayne Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Green Acres Cemetery in Columbus, according to Taylor Funeral Home, Phenix City. Visitation will be today from noon until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Tyson was born in Columbus, the third son of the late Rev. George B. Tyson Sr., and Ouida Williams Tyson. He accepted Christ as his savior early in his life and became a member of the Greater St. Mark A.M.E. Church under the pastorage of his late father, the Rev. George B. Tyson Sr. After graduation from William H. Spencer High School in Columbus in 1957. Mr. Tyson attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas where he received a B.S. Degree in Sociology in 1966. In 1975, he received a M.S. Degree in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Laverne, Calif. Mr. Tyson married Christine Johnson of Phenix City in Feb. 1962. They were blessed with two lovely daughters. Mr. Tyson spent his entire employment years working with children, young adults and families. In 1966, he was one of several students personally recruited by President Lyndon B. Johnson during a visit to Huston Tillotson College in Austin, Teas, to work in his "Great Society Program - The Job Corps Centers". His Job Corps Centers' appointments brought him and his family to McCook, Neb.; Price, Utah; Los Angeles, Calif.; and Ashland, Ore. He spent eight years working as a Guidance Counseling Director at the Pinon Boarding School on the Navajo Indian Reservation (Bureau of Indian Affairs) in Pinon, Ariz. Mr. Tyson concluded his career as a children's social worker for the Los Angeles County Department of Children Services. He received numerous awards and commendations throughout his years of employment. He retired in 1993 and moved back to Columbus, Ga., with his wife. Survivors include his mother, Ouida Tyson of Columbus; his wife of 42 years, Christine Tyson of Columbus; two daughters, Audrey Tyson Jacobs (Sylvester Jr.) of Lakewood, Calif., and Adrienne Tyson de De La Rosa (Guillermo) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two grandchildren, SabrŽ Alexis Jacobs and Caleb Wesley Jacobs, both of Lakewood; three brothers, George B. Tyson Jr., (Alvena) of Orlando, Fla., William J. Tyson Sr. (Luella) of Columbus and Richard Alvin Tyson of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hunter West (Rob) of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother-in-law, Willie Davis of Columbus; six nieces, six nephews, three great nephews, one great niece, numerous cousins, family and friends.
