My deepest sympathy for the family...My parents, too, were a part of the "Clean Up" and a member of the Betterment Assoc. My father knew Mr and Mrs Bentley well. I remember, while growing up, the Bentley's taking a church youth group to Montgomery. Mr and Mrs Bentley took me aside and told me how things were before I was born and what a wonderful/brave thing my father had done. Mrs. Bentley was a kind generous person. Kathi Caldwell Segrest.

I had the good fortune about five or six years ago to visit Mrs. Bentley. Together we toured Phenix City and the surrounding area with me driving and her being my guide. She described much of what took place in her life during the "Phenix City clean up". We talked a great deal. Mrs. Bentley showed me the various places mentioned in Margarets Barnes book, "The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama". She described who was where and what was happening. I had a wonderful day, more importantly she had a wonderful day to see and to reminisce the special and difficult times in her life. Mrs. Bentley was indeed a unique and very talented woman with the most beautiful hands. I am greatful to my sister Charlotte for falling in love and marrying her son Hugh Bo, thus giving me the opportunity to know and love someone as remarkable as Bernice Roche Bentley.
