Ellerslie, GA- SFC U.S. Army (Ret.) David Michael Carey, 53, of Ellerslie, GA passed away Monday, September 10, 2018 at his home. A graveside service with full military honors will be at 2:30 pm, Friday, September 14, 2018 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.
Dave was born September 25, 1964 in Akron, Ohio, the son of Allen B. Carey and Violet V. Carey. He attended public school in Akron and Copley, OH and shortly after graduation enlisted in the Army. His career spanned more than 30 years including several assignments to Germany and Korea, he was deployed twice to Iraq and Bosnia. In Erlangen, Germany he met and married the love of his life Karin in 2007. He retired in 2013 at Ft. Benning and went to work as a civil service employee for three years. In 2017, Dave and Karin moved to Sarasota, FL where he worked in insurance with Bankers Life. They moved back to the Columbus area in 2018, living in Harris County. Dave was well liked and well respected for his intelligence and loyalty towards the Army, Civilian Employers and co-workers. Dave, very book smart and a true and passionate Republican, loved arguing about politics and will be greatly missed by all that knew him well. He was a mastermind in math, history and geography.
Dave and Karin have 5 senior cats. They will greatly miss him too, especially Shadow and Snow, that followed him around everywhere.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Allen Carey. Survivors include his wife, Karin Hagele of Ellerslie; his mother, Violet Carey of Akron, OH; three brothers, Mike Carey and his wife, Tami, Steve Carey and his wife, Ann and Mark Carey, all of Akron; his niece, Megan and her husband Dan of Washington, DC and Kelsey of Marietta; one nephew, Tyler Carey and his wife Kati and their daughter Ava and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

I worked here at Ft. Benning with David at FMX. I remember how happy and excited he was when President Trump won the election. I considered him a good friend and miss talking about everything from Cats to good ole times in the military. From one cat lover to another.
