Gloria Cummings Obituary

Gloria J. Cummings July 31, 1922 - April 11, 2005 COLUMBUS, GA - Gloria J. Cummings, age 82, of 1602 17th Avenue, died Monday, April 11, 2005 at her residence. Funeral services for Mrs.. Cummings will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church with burial to follow in Riverdale Cemetery. The family will have a visitation Tuesday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. Mrs. Cummings was born July 31, 1922 in Columbus, the daughter of Dr. C. Denton and Edna Rudisill Johnson. A lifelong resident of Columbus, Mrs. Cummings was the owner and floral designer of the Petal Shop from 1958 to 1983. She was an avid gardener and teacher of floral design throughout her life. She was a past board member of the Columbus Daycare Center, past president of the Christian Fellowship Association, past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and was pole manager for precinct 33 for over 20 years. Mrs. Cummings was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church where she was former Sunday school teacher, a long time member of St. Lydia's Guild, and a very active member of the Flower Guild. Mrs. Cummings was preceded in death by her husband, James Ed Cummings, and is survived by 2 daughters, Sandra Charlton (Rick), of Memphis, TN., Melinda Strickland (Phil) of Columbus; 3 sons, Jimmy Cummings (Jane), David Cummings (The Reverend Ruth), and Stephen Cummings (Gail), all of Columbus, a sister, Edna J. Johnson of Panama City Beach, FL., a brother, Dr. C. Denton Johnson of Columbus, 12 grandchildren, Wycliffe Cummings, Lucy Farmer, Carson Cummings, Brad Cummings, Abbie Cummings Stallcup, Philip Strickland, Sara Cummings, Edmund Charlton, Katie Cummings, David Cummings, Jr., Caroline Cummings, and Sally Cummings; 5 great grandchildren, Carson Cummings, Jr., Ford Cummings, Jacob Strickland, Harper Cummings, and Eleanor Farmer.
